This book proved to be a very solid bridge into the rest of the story. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

This second installment definitely took some risks in the storytelling, but I enjoyed the unpredictability. There were some bits I didn't fully buy into here, but they don't turn out to be as important as I feared they would be, so I'm forgiving it.

This is petty, oh well -- my favorite character of the series is absent for the majority of this book and frankly, that's the half-star this one lost for me as compared to the first. I spent a lot of the book frustrated with the protagonist, but I think that makes sense considering where she is emotionally during this part of her journey.

My relief at the conclusion of this particular installment was by far the most profound of the series.

I really enjoyed this book, much more than the first one honestly. I wish could sit down and finish the next two.

The Riddle is an amazing sequel to The Naming. This continues the adventures of Maerad with her teacher-companion Cadvan as she tries to unravel who she is. There are many twists and turns on her journey. Although why wouldn't there be when the main character is 16-years-old? A must read for any who enjoy an adventure of self-discovery.

The second book picks up right after the events of the first book and while I thought the story is very well put together, I do think the first third of the book could have been shortened. It felt very repetitive to the first book and isn't until the mountain part that I really felt like the story was taking off. I did really enjoy the character development and the added dimensions to Maerad's character. A few more puzzle pieces slide into place. I am keen for the next one because it focuses on her brother's story!
but why did the dog have to die?? :(

The high fantasy elements ended up being too much for me - at times I felt like I was reading textbook about culture, lore and geography instead of fiction (so much tedious traveling!). Also, I was reminded that I don't really like "the chosen one" trope if it's done without any subversion.
