I love how Homes' novels focus on characters who fully surrender to their emotional needs. Even in the extreme narrative of The End of Alice, she remains a nuanced writer who is so damn easy to fall for.
It is hardly impossible writing more about adoption, there is everything, every feeling and every conclusion. I don't mind if there are crazy people in a book and they are not able to change, here is an exception, one of them get well by the end of the book. Forgiveness, how important it is!
Highly recommended to read for everyone who has a child or who has not.

I dunno how I felt about this one. Just picked a random book off my “beige” bookshelf because that’s the fullest shelf and it was Mothers Day so I shrugged and went with it. I honestly don’t remember ever picking this up anywhere. I’m usually pretty good at remember where or when I got books but this one….I got nothing.
Anyways, we have Jody, a young adult just figuring out her life and what she wants to do with it. She’s adopted, just generally struggling with some things and goes to therapy. Then we have her new therapist, Claire, who starts to believe Jody is her daughter that she had given up years ago. Boundaries are crossed, it gets weird, gets mildly annoying which I’m not sure was the character or the story.
Easy read and not BAD, but I give it a solid “eh”

Definitely not as compelling as This Book Will Save Your Life or May We Be Forgiven, but it is well written and an interesting story which keeps you going to the end.
I am a bit of a A.M. Homes fan -- like her voice and sensibility. This novel, an early one, was pretty wrenching as the two main characters slither into disfunction.
This is only my second Homes novel but I gotta say that I get a kick out of these twisted, somehow relatable, messed-up, kinda normal characters. I don't need my characters to be likable or virtuous, they just need to be interesting. Not that I found Jody or Claire unlikable, just compellingly flawed. I don't find Homes moving or endearing, but I certainly plow through her books. Hmmmm
The premise is interesting, the characters are kind of fascinating in a neurotic way, but this gets really sloppy at the end.
There's a good idea between the covers of this book, I just wish it had been developed by a more talented writer. Homes creates characters that are not just unbalanced, they're all over the place and rather unbelievable. I'm sure her intention is to shock the reader, but she just comes off as a hack.
