This book is about a girl who is popular, on her inside however.. she is 100% comic fan and all things related. :)

Watch out, spoilers!

The book was really fun, most of the times Maddie was a nice girl, though I specifically liked the parts where she didn't pretend, where she was just herself. Like when she was with Logan, or when she did Larping. I especially loved the Larping part, my favourite part being where she just owned the Dark Fairy girl. :) Yeah for Logan's mom, and yeah for Maddie for being awesome at the game.

Also the ending where she tells everyone she likes comics and such, I liked that, she has really grown. From a pretend to be popular/cheerleader girl, to a cheerleader with a geeky side. I am really glad that her best friend was ok with it (though I wouldn't know why not), and that they made up.

There were however a few things that I don't like.

The book begins with her telling about her school's Halloween Festival, she describes the whole thing. That is all ok and it sounds fun, but then we come to the costume contest, and there, is the part which I don't like.
She presents herself as Spectrum Girl, and she worked really hard on her costume, making a wonderful rainbow-coloured cape. Now you think, the girl will win this, everyone will love it. Wrong. It begins with her teacher introducing her to the audience. The teacher doesn't announce, no, it sounds more like she is asking a question.
Then Maddie gets up and does some twirls, says what she is. Silence ensues, then a question from the audience, which she happily answers, after that someone calls her a dork, and then everyone laughs. I don't understand that.. why laugh at her? If someone wanders around in a Batman or Superman or Star Wars thing, everyone finds that ok, but this is strange/dorkish? Seriously what?

Another thing would be her breaking up with her boyfriend through VOICEMAIL!! Who the hell does that? I know you want Logan, I know you want him really bad, but girl, if that boy loves you/wants you, he will wait. If not, he is not right for you.
I was really pissed at her for not even waiting for her boyfriend, talking it over with him. Instead, she just puts in a voicemail (and a few more) and then thinks that it is over. Um no girl, it isn't. If the other party doesn't know it, you are not over.
Then she just starts dating Logan, really what?

Other then those things, and Maddie being a bit shallow. It was a good book, I would recommend it if you want a light fluffy read.

My thoughts:

The Summer I became a Nerd was a cute, light and enjoyable read. Perfect for summer! Its light, has no real drama or conflict, and honestly, I felt that to be very refreshing. Especially with all the loaded angst-y books I’ve been reading lately.

It’s also filled with the most awesome nerdness, which just makes my inner nerd jump up and down! Filled with all sorts of nerddom, heroes, comics and animated goodness, The Summer I became a Nerd is just plain adorkable!

'I'm a nerd hidden inside a popular girl's body.'

Madelyne Summer has spent her life hiding her love for all things nerdy, since an embarrassing incident that has left her scared of other’s judgment. She has the prefect façade, cheerleader, dating the quarterback and the popular bff. No one would suspect she wishes her school uniform included a cape, and that she has a crush on Peter Parker. It’s only during the summer that Madelyne can let her nerd flag fly, well, discretely. But this summer, things change, and while trying to get her hands on her favorite comic, her nerd side is revealed by none other than, Logan Scott, a guy she’s been crushing on since he wore that ‘porn shirt’ to school.

Madelyne has made it a mission to hide her nerdself from her friends at school, from everyone in general, from the humiliation that would most likely come if anyone found out that she is a lover of all things nerd. At times, I really enjoyed Maddie, she reminded me of my nerd self. I do love me some good comic books, hero movies, and anime once in a while. However, as much as Maddie loves her nerdiness, she is also so scared of the judgment of others, I really wanted to shack her because of this. But as the story progressed, she realized that she shouldn't be scared of what others think. I then really started to like her character. Also, I really enjoyed that when she made a mistake, she really owned up to it!

Then you have her nerd crush, Logan Scott. He’s a cute, soccer player whose family runs the local comic book store. When a certain incident brings these two together, and Logan figures out about Maddie’s nerdy side, things get interesting! I also have to admit, I might have a nerd crush on Logan Scott, too. He’s just so adorkable! As Maddie’s character grows, so does his, and watching that was pretty interesting!

Not only did this book have some cool main characters, but the side characters were original and fun to read. Especially Scott’s mom and best friend, Dan. He is a character I really enjoyed, with his humor and smart mouth, he had me cracking up.

‘You can’t spend your life being afraid of what other people think.’

Another reason I just enjoyed this book is because, well, I’m a nerd! A pretty big one at times. Also, the setting in this book is in Louisiana, I loved that! Since I spent a lot of my childhood there, it was like reading about home, in a way.

It did have, at parts, a very fast pace, and I felt like more could have been added to the plot to make it more rounded. But despite that, the character growth and flow of the story-line was nice.

The Summer I Became A Nerd is a book about being true to yourself, regardless of what others may say or think. Being happy with who you are and accepting who you are, too. I felt that is a very good message to the readers.

I really enjoyed this book! It’s a fun, light read, with no real drama or angst. It's a perfect book to read during the summer. So, if that’s what you are looking for, then add this book to your to-be-read list now!

“People are going to judge you for all kinds of reasons for the rest of your life. Because you vote one way or the other, because you go to one school or the other, because you look a certain way. It’s a fact of life: you can’t make everyone happy. But you can make you happy”

This was the most fun I've had reading a book in a long while, and even though I'm still in the throes of my reading slump (hence why I've only gotten to complete two books in the month of January), this went a long way to encourage me to pick up some more stuff.

Obviously the best part of the story was the geeky fandom goodness, but the romance was actually pretty solid too. It was downright swoon worthy at times (at least to me), and it reminded me why I love reading romance... and why I just didn't care for Bookish and the Beast all that much. My favorite scenes have to be the ones involving LARP, I never knew it could be so interesting.

My biggest criticism is how predictable and just plain irritating the conflicts were, I know we need some drama to keep the story engaging, but it just didn't work for me. Overall still a fun read, and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes books with similar plotlines.

I picked this book up because I was in the mood for a light, quick read, and it pretty much hit the spot! In middle school Maddie got made fun of (very publicly) because of her love of comic books, and so she’s been hiding that part of herself – and anything else she worries might be deemed geeky – for years. Even though she’s dating the high school quarterback, she’s not that into him, and she’s been secretly crushing on a fellow comic book nerd, Logan. When she gets the opportunity to spend more time with him (and with the geeky pursuits of comic books, LARPing and more!) she can’t resist – even if it could lead to social suicide if anyone finds out. Maddie was endearing, even though I sometimes wanted to shake her and tell her to just confess already! (Especially to her best friend, who was sweet and understanding, and there was absolutely no reason why Maddie shouldn’t confide in her). But, at the same time, I realize that the pressure to be “cool” in high school is real, and I could definitely see how Maddie’s past embarrassment had shaped her fear of letting anyone know the real her. The pressure we put on ourselves to fit in (in any scenario – not just high school) can sometimes be way more powerful even than pressure put on us from any outside source. Oh, and I loved the LARPing scenes – SO much fun!!

If I had one complaint, it would be that Maddie’s issues with her best friend and boyfriend were settled really quickly and easily. She had to work a little harder for Logan, but in all of those cases I would have liked to see just a little bit more of the repercussions of her actions. Still, this book was just what it was meant to be – lighthearted and entertaining and sweet. I give it 4 stars.

I saw The Summer I Became A Nerd on Netgalley and the synopsis drew me in immediatley. I requested it but didn't really expect to be accepted so I was super excited to find I had been.

Madelyne Summers is leading a double life. On the outside she is a gorgeous cheerleader who dates the star quarterback, but behind closed doors she is a secret geek, fangirling over the newest comic or movie. Her two worlds haven't crossed paths for years, until the fateful day she makes a trip to The Phoenix, a local comic store to purchase a copy of the Super Ones #400, the last one is the series and only available in print copy, one that she has to wait 4-6 weeks to be delivered due to being out of stock.
Logan works at The Phoenix, well technically his family owns the store so he looks after it rather than works there, but he also attends Madelyne's school, and he sees through her disguise but keeps it a secret from school. Soon this duo find themselves spending lots of time together, discussing comics and playing LARP games.

I instantly loved Madelyne, there was something about her, possibly the fact that she is a secret geek, that made me like her and want to know more about her. When she tries to be all sneaky and secretive when going to get her comic I thought it was cute and ridiculous that she would think her flaky disguise would mean she was safe.

I love Logan and his family. His Mum was a cheerleader in school, married a geek, and has no qualms about showing off her cheer leading skills to Madelyne. Logan has three siblings who remind me so much of my childhood growing up and petty arguments, although a lot of the time it was me getting picked on. Although we don't get to see them much it was another case of instant love for them.

I loved every single page of The Summer I Became A Nerd, the characters are believable and likeable, even the popular crowd don't seem so bad in small doses. Trying to live a double life is bound to end up crashing down on Madelyne, and when it does she is left to pick up the pieces and try to sort out what she truly wants from life. I enjoyed getting to see how Madelyne's double life unfolded between the pages, and while she does make some silly mistakes when she tries to repent her ways she certainly does it in a spectacular way. I love the geeky references thrown into this The Summer I Became A Nerd and while some parts of it were extremely geeky, especially the LARP (live action role playing), it sounds cool when reading it in a book, but it's not something I would personally do.

The Summer I Became A Nerd was a light fun read that was a refreshing change to my latest reads. Leah Rae Miller is definitely on my to watch list now and if at some point in the future we get to visit Madelyne again, I will definitely be picking up the book.
