Normally in these kind of stories I have high hopes that are dashed by arbitrary rules and protagonist stupidity... but this one is really working for me. The central mysteries are pretty hard to parse, the protagonists are well drawn (both literally and figuratively) while none of them need to hold the idiot ball, and I just adore this dramatic art style they have going. Here's hoping the second half works as well!

Another great world thought up by the brilliant mind of Tynion.
This one has got me in its GRIP and I can't wait to figure it all out (hopefully). The queer rep is a-fucking-mazing, the characters are sooo good and it's the perfect level of eerie, without being gorey at all.
I'm not yet sure what to think of Walter, which speaks for his duality. He's a dick, but would I have done anything differently in his shoes? I'm not sure.

The art is arresting and full of little details that pulled me into the panels, which is both a blessing and a curse because there is so much text that I found myself just looking at the pretty pictures instead of reading.
There is so much text. So much. Speech bubble after speech bubble of super long discussions that I'm not used to seeing in graphic novels but are needed with how complex this story is. You need all the information you're given and there's really no way to express all of it visually.
But my main gripe is the panel progression because it's almost impossible to know when panels stay on one page or go across the spread. There are times when one format does not follow the same pattern the next time it comes around. I hate when that happens and it happened way too many times here.
All said, I'm hooked and need to know what happens next.

Continuing my trend of picking up comics from authors I’ve already read, The Nice House on the Lake is written by James Tynion IV, who also penned Something is Killing the Children and House of Slaughter, a comic book world that I discovered last year and have been eager to dive back into.
I’ve been on a bit of a horror and thriller kick lately and honestly a lot of what I’ve read has not resonated with me the way this book did. This title rides the line of horror, science fiction, and mystery in a very satisfying way. Unfortunately, it is difficult to talk about it in more than the most obtuse ways lest the revelations within the book be spoiled. The art is adept enough to catch moments of quiet, beauty, and the grotesque with equal appeal. Each chapter has a set pattern that keeps the intrigue high while slowly rolling out the story of how the characters got to this point. Again, it is all very satisfying.
I’d recommend this book to horror fans, particularly ones with locked room mystery settings like Cabin in the Woods, Virtue’s Last Reward, Circle, or Dangan Ronpa.
