Low Town by Daniel Polansky

The narrator’s language wore me down pretty quickly. I don’t mind reading the POV of a character who isn’t meant to be admirable, but there are only so many times you can read someone referring to “mongoloids” before you feel drained and… done.

A nice taut noir novel set in a low fantasy world. Some will complain that there isn't enough world building but that would just add pages while taking from the plot. Meanwhile this allows for more stories down the line anyway.

The mystery is well plotted, with an interesting twist at the end and the main character is very multi faceted and plays the part very well.

I enjoyed this book, but something about it stopped it from really grabbing me.

At the start, it felt like it was trying too hard to be bleak and dreary. Later on, I saw the twist coming miles away.

So, an enjoyable story, with memorable characters and perfectly good writing. I may follow up with the rest of the series sometime.

Loved this author's writing style. Smart & gritty, great at banter.

I usually enjoy noir / hard boiled crime fiction especially from Hammet and Chandler. Plus, the fantasy elements sounded really cool in the mix but I just couldn't get into this one unfortunately.

This was good. Kind of gritty, kind of fantasy. Not the unicorns and rainbows fantasy. There's nothing nice in this book, and almost everyone is horrible. Polansky does a good job of keeping the tension high, and hiding the overall outcome of the story. You get a feeling that things aren't exactly what they seem, but nothing definite. I'll read more in this setting.

Dark, gritty, awesome. Not much else to say really. Highly recommend.
