Meh. The narration on this was kind of terrible. Seemed like a synthesized voice reading it. Also the general storyline was really mediocre.

This fell very flat for me. Loved the opening chapter and the premise but ultimately did not love the character chemistry at all. Still not sure how she and Perry turned their awkward interactions into what it ultimately becomes, not sure how she and her family weren’t more cautious when her sisters boyfriend (who sounds like an absolute asshole) makes a return, and the arranged marriage…..? Too much for me.

This was a very fun & quick read! Really glad I picked it up on a whim at the library. I'll definitely have to look at other books by this author too.

Light, fun, predictable. Didn't have to think too hard. It was the right read at the right time for me. Usually I prefer something a little meatier but this was just right.

Lipman never fails to entertain. In this crazy story two people are on home detention for ludicrous crimes. They have apartments in the same building in New York City. Highjinks ensue. There’s a murder investigation, a fraudulent green card marriage, and lots of laughs. It was the perfect read on a long plane flight.

I have enjoyed Elinor Lipman since The Inn at Lake Devine and her latest novel did not disappoint. Jane Morgan, lawyer and identical twin sister of Jackleen Morgan, MD is surreptitiously filmed on her roof top deck while enjoying the naked company of a junior member of her law firm. Suspended for 6 months, convicted of a misdemeanor and sentenced to house confinement, she needs new activities and hobbies to maintain her sanity. Luckily, her NYC apartment building provides opportunities and her sister keeps her in food. Ms. Lipman's descriptions of people and places are so sharp, you are in great hands reading her novels.

Cute premise but the characters were flat

A quick, fun, and entertaining read. It’s not perfect but genuinely enjoyable. Would def recommend especially as a beach read.

It makes sense that a 72 year old female author would think that turning 35 & not being married or having children would be the WORST thing that could happen to a woman. Instead her heroine finds her felon & does scything to win his…love? This started out promising, a strong, older professional woman who engages in sex with who she wants when she wants. Then, it progressed to garbage. The main character, Jane, starts out as a free loving woman who has spontaneous sex with a coworker on the roof of her building. She quickly transitions to a PICK ME girl. Only concerned about being prettier and more domestic than other women in the book…including her own twin. All women turn out to be enemies except for one wife who can provide her something she needs (a new job).
After being sentenced to house arrest, she turns into a prude who has transactional sex with her neighbor. She judges her other neighbor (a female) for having a plain appearance and choosing to marry a man she just met. She forces herself into peoples lives and then acts put out when they want to include her. Jane accuses Mandy(the PLAIN female neighbor) of TMI but Jane was the one who went to Mandy for advice on having sex with Perry.
Also, Jane is the one who tells everyone she was arrested for indent exposure by having sexual with a random on her apartment roof. This book is all over the place. Jane brags about expensive art, accessories and clothes but then when Perry doesn’t provide an engagement ring she says it’s of no concern.
When Perry proposes all she cares about is that she BEAT her twin to the man. He PICKED HER. Jane loves her twin sister, Jacqueline, but then quickly decides she does not like her and starts sleeping with the man she set her up on a date with. Even her transactional sex with her neighbor Perry is boring, which makes no sense considering she is the same character who had sex with her coworker on the first date on the roof of her building.
Avoid this book at all costs. Clearly written by someone with out of date ideas about sex

Reading this book was like reading the draft of an unfinished novel. The dialogue was jarring, the pacing was odd, and there needed to be more detail (though maybe fewer characters/plotlines). Parts of it made no sense, and I found myself saying "what the hell?!" fairly regularly.

I would've given it 1 star, but I enjoyed the concept and 1 star seemed almost unfairly low.
