This is one of those books that would capture me and I would blaze through the pages, only to turn around and have me laboriously making my way through.
Short and moving
A beautiful story of life. There is so much packed into a short book. It doesn’t have a story arch of a traditional novel, but is more truly the story of a life. The writing is beautiful. I’m left feeling content at the ending, though not necessarily moved or changed. Overall, a lovely and quick read.

I read this entire book on a flight from Seattle to Orange County. It’s so short which I think was ultimately a detriment. There wasn’t enough time or details to really care about Zorrie or any of the supporting characters. The author introduced so many characters with little background of detail, so it was sometimes hard to keep track of who was who and how they were all interrelated. I think the book would have benefited from adding years to each chapter as I was constantly wondering how old Zorrie was throughout the book. Very middle of the road. The most interesting part was about the radium girls, and I would be inclined to read some of the books about them mentioned in the acknowledgements. 2.5 rounded up.

I love books about ordinary people living ordinary lives, and I enjoyed the first quarter of this book. But this excerpt perfectly illustrates how the rest of the book goes: "She had the flu one year, three colds the next, and then wasn't sick the following two. On balance, the farm did well enough to make it worth investing in a second grain bin. Her old truck gave up the ghost, so she got herself a new one." Nothing happens. Not even psychological action. BORING. At least it's short.
My first from this author.
Rather enjoyed - the rhythm of the words and phrasings suited very well the overall storyline, despite being a rather slim novel and encompassing so much.
