Zorrie

Zorrie is an absolutely beautifully-written novella about a fairly ordinary life of a woman in Indiana. As a Hoosier myself, it's clear how well the author knows the state and its people (it seems he grew up in the same area where the novel is set), but I believe anyone could relate to the characters in the book. The joy in this novel is primarily in the writing and descriptions of Zorrie's thoughts as the plot is somewhat limited by design, although a particular job she takes during the Great Depression is fascinating. I'm not familiar with the author's previous works, but I look forward to reading another one.

Quiet, lyrical brilliance. I appreciate how Hunt trusts his reader so much — often writers spoil big moments or reveals by overstating them, sometimes I didn’t realise what had happened pages ago for minutes — as such, I got to enjoy a lovely, “Oh!” feeling several times.

I loved the first 2/3 of this book so much. It was well paced, covering Zorrie's life in a way that was succinct while still feeling complete and engaging. The note I made as I read was that I "felt full" reading it. I also thought it had a magical realism vibe - even though it stayed totally in reality, just a similar feeling (which I really liked).

Unfortunately the last 1/3 of the book dragged for me. Zorrie's relationship with her neighbor Noah in particular pulled the plot down and slowed things way way down. I didn't love the ending.

A lovely, quiet celebration of a woman's remarkable and yet ordinary life.
