to start, this book definitely had an enthralling story and it is no wonder why it is a literary classic. i have never watched the movies or heard any spoilers about it so a lot of the plot twists left me genuinely surprised which is one of the best qualities a book can have in my opinion.
this might be a personal issue due to my brain getting used to mindless reading but it was definitely a more challenging read than a lot of other novels i’ve read recently. reading this book definitely took a bit of brain power and i found the book to be less immersive since usually if i start reading i completely block out my surroundings.
i loved how each of the characters were given their own stories and it seemed like side characters did not exist because readers are given a little window into each character’s personal life. this let me make better judgments about which characters i liked more than others (although none of the characters i would really say i loved since they all had some kind of vice or major character flaw).
on the issue of characters, i really do wish there was at least one character i could root for, but i suppose that might be the point seeing as no human is perfect especially when the book surrounds murderers but I digress.
definitely one of my favorite classics i’ve ever read (not saying all too much) although now that i read the novel i am even more disturbed about the male fascination with it lol considering the content.

What makes The Godfather a classic is its ability to deepen readers' understanding of the main themes without missing a beat. Its mass appeal is not limited to pure entertainment. The plot is exciting and largely unpredictable. Virtually all characters are well-developed, including those that appear in no more than a page. Although most characters are basically part of the same 'profession' (i.e. members of the Italian mafia), each one has a distinct personality that allows you to easily identify them when they appear again elsewhere in the book. You will feel that you know them enough to make sense of their actions and decisions. My only criticism is that some scenes were gratuitous and took up too much space without making significant contributions to the plot.

The Godfather is a cultural cornerstone, and as a fan of the iconic film, I admire Puzo’s meticulous research and unforgettable characters, particularly Vito and Michael Corleone. The saga of the Corleone family is gripping, blending power, loyalty, and betrayal into a timeless narrative.
However, the novel’s prose and structure fall short of its stellar story. The writing often feels like pulp fiction, with a meandering pace and unnecessary tangents. Gratuitous sex scenes and odd subplots, like the bizarrely detailed thread of a Las Vegas abortion doctor, feel irrelevant and unnecessary, detracting from the core drama.
In my view, this is a rare case where the film surpasses the book. That said, the novel offers deeper insight into Don Vito Corleone’s perspective, enriching his character beyond the screen. While the story is a masterpiece, the execution keeps it from literary greatness.
