dark mysterious tense medium-paced

I gratefully received an ARC of this book from the publisher Bookouture to read and review honestly. I found this a brilliant book, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this fast-paced police murder thriller! The plot is relentless and grips you at every page, plenty of twists and action that keeps you guessing right until the end. It also introduces DCI Foster and her team who are my new favourite detectives, I look forward to reading more of her in the future!

Great book

The book was very descriptive regarding the crime scenes, however I wasn't completely sold on the motive. Maybe if the author fleshed out the characters more, the motive would have been more believable. I loved the characters of Moss and Peterson. The book kept my attention and for that, it gets 4 stars.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was the first book I chose to read in 2025 when I made a New Years Resolution to try to read more and it was a great choice! I love murder mysteries and this was always at the top of lists when I looked up the best ones! It was a page turner and the twist was no immediately obvious which we love when that happens! The only reason it didn't receive a five star from me was because the climax did get a little bit confusing and a side plot, although emotionally impactful, felt like it was only there to be a red herring and ultimately had little purpose otherwise.

Quick read, the plot is nothing special, but it's ok. Kept me engaged, but I've definitely read better thrillers and I'm not a fan of the obvious male gaze that is dominating character descriptions.

This action-packed, intense, who-done-it with an intriguing new lead character named Erika Foster was interesting and well written. Erika has 25 years on the job and is no shrinking violet. When a serial murderer breaks form and steps over the line to kill a wealthy young woman rather than Eastern European prostitutes Erika is called in to lead the investigation. Erika’s brash comments and behavior manage to step on toes from the very beginning. She continues to work the case as she believes it should be handled rather than bowing to pressure from those above her who want to keep someone with clout happy. More murders and deaths occur, numerous suspects are pursued, help is provided to Erika by Peterson and Moss and eventually she is lined up in the crosshairs of the serial murderer wondering if she will survive.

At times I felt Erika took risks a seasoned investigator might not have, I wondered at her lack of political insight/caring and hoped that all would eventually work out for her. As the first book in a new series there is much to explore in Erika’s past and a future for her that could include any number of wonderful or not so wonderful things. I have a feeling this series has potential.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of this book to read and review.

This is not my normal genera of book as I usually stick to the chick flicks and love stories. However I believe this book was either free or cheap on the kindle, so I purchased for my holiday. Well I couldn't put it down! It is very well written and the characters are very likeable and quite easy to picture, which is a big thing for me. The story was easy to follow and quite exciting. My only critic would be that some of the sections seemed cut off edited to short, I want a bit more description or meat into some of the parts, but at the same time it was right to the point. Have already downloaded the 2 follow up books!
