Although at first the unusual breaks in sentences punctuation were a little hard to get used to (a bit like reading poetry), the overall structure of the book was beautifully crafted to create multiple characters, all with vastly different stories that nevertheless intertwine. This book explores so many perspectives, all from minority characters, while tackling issues such as racism, homophobia and sexism (as well as delving into aspects of transphobia and colourism) in our current time as well as the past.

We had no power last night so I finished this brilliant book off in candle light.

The stories of the 12 women (with each new chapter, a new life story, all woven and connected across generations) you go from adventurers, to pioneers from heart breaking assault to the fight to change, themselves and the world around them. There are so many journeys, explored through many incredible stories, some of the lives explore great moments others just the simplicity of beautiful mundane lives.

The reason I listed this as a valuable read however is because; there are always multiple ways to view a situation. This book provides you with different perspectives and also the history behind actions and behavior that we are all guilty of jumping to conclusions about.

Heart breaking at times and then also so very get it girl you can do it! I didn’t think this book could get better and then the ending did just that….

*please not all the content warnings, I may have missed some. Everything is light on (no great details) but this book does address many issues that girls, women & other face. Including abuse. It’s an eye opening book in regards to the point of views of the one directly affected and then also those around them and how that may be interpreting their changed behavior…

Once, I got used to the unconventional style of writing, I could not put this book down. Evaristo delicately weaves 12 stories of unique, seemingly real characters together in a way that left me clamouring for more. Girl, Woman, Other oftentimes felt closer to poetry, it was so beautifully executed.

UGH so good! More than deserving of all the acclaim. The characters feel like living, breathing people, while also cutting clear strokes about real world issues. Highlights for me were Amma, Yazz, Carole, and Bummi. Less impressed with Shirley, Winsome, and Penelope, though even then, the way they tie into the themes and story is wonderful. Just a fantastic read. The style works so, so well.
