I’ve wanted more of Xhinna ever since she became a blue rider, and I got it! Nice to have multiple main characters who are explicitly queer (note I don’t mean detailed sex scenes, just that their identity isn’t left as a matter of subtext). The new way they found of fighting Thread was fascinating, but this is the problem with prequels—clearly it had been abandoned or at least not recorded by the time of other books, and the reason for that seemed very thin.

This was the last in the series that Anne MCaffrey was involved in writing. She died as the book was being edited. This is also part of the series that she co-wrote with her son and I don't enjoy them as much as the ones she wrote on her own.

I found it confusing as there were too many characters to keep track of and I wasn't really clear on their relationships to each other or what time they came from.

Meh. If this had been a book set anywhere other than Pern (or other much-loved sci-fi/fantasy world), I probably wouldn't have finished it. The characters are sappy, there's very little dramatic tension, the time travel meme is simultaneously way overused and limited in arbitrary ways, and a lot of the descriptions of personal relationships reads like a "non-traditional sexuality is ok" pamphlet. In large part it feels like we've read this before in Dragongirl and Dragon's Time.

Having said all that, it's still Pern. There are still dragons. It was kind of neat to see a book from the perspective of a rider of a "lesser" dragon (a blue) instead of the "royalty" (queen/bronzes). There are a few points which give nods to previous (and in my opinion, better) books.

If you're a Pern fan and have read all the rest of the books, this one's worth it for completeness. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.

Saddened to find out that Anne passed away last November. Her universe will never be the same

Anne McCaffrey is the quintessential writer of fantasy books pertaining to dragons. These books are always wonderful, well written, and perfectly characterized. All of her series are great but the ones that take place on Pern are the best of all. A thoroughly fun and engaging read.

I picked this one up because it promised me a female blue rider and canonical lesbian relationships, both of which are something that the Pern universe has sorely needed since the beginning. But Todd McCaffrey's writing will never be his mother's, although it has the potential to, given enough time and practice, someday be palatable in its own right.
