Read via audiobook

I loved the narrator of the audiobook, she really helped to create Seanan McGuire's magical Manhatten. I love seanan McGuire's imangiation and world building, but it did work against her a little int his book because the actual plot fell through. The whole plot was summed up in 20 pages? And honestly it didn't make any sense
However! I love character driver books and this setting, so honestly the world building that was 90% of this book was enjoyable and I'm not mad at it!

I love her writing so much. Her choice of words and phrases is always amazing. I cannot say that this is one of my favorites of hers. The idea is definitely unique but something about the execution is off.
It was just okay for me.

From the dedication, to the poem at the beginning, to the first few lines, the first chapters, this book broke me.

And then, somehow, it made it worth experiencing.

I cried through the entire thing.

This book is for people with survivor's guilt, who have trouble moving on, who face difficulty and uncertainty. For people who want to be good and are trying to find their way.

It is gorgeous and heartbreaking.

Probably my favorite of McGuire's books to date. Really well built.

Not my favorite McGuire, but atmospheric in a way that only she can do.

Jenna is a ghost who lives in a world where she needs to earn her way to her full death, until a witch comes along and messes it all up!

This was very disappointing. I love the Wayward Children series, but this was boring and too drawn out.

Things I liked:

Chapter 12. Maybe Chapter 13.

Things I didn't like:

Everything else.
1. The magic system is confusing and not well thought out.
2. I didn't care about anyone.
3. The beginning was so drawn out and repetitive, it reads like a bad student creative writing class assignment. Nothing actually happens until halfway through the book.
4. This is also not a book. It is a short story that is forced into being longer by lots of repetition of the same few sentences and phrases.
5. There is no real plot. It is very sketchy and unformed. "A girl dies. Her sister dies. The sister is a ghost. But the ghosts of NYC are disappearing. The ghost finds the other ghosts. She rescues them. The end". Literally there is very little in between.
6. This is not even close to her best writing.

A short but poignant novel. I didn't understand all of it. I loved most of it. Seanan always draws you in, sucks you up, and spits you out feeling more and less than you were before. It's amazing and terrifying, and I will continue to read everything she writes.
