2/5: couldn’t wait for it to be over, I was SO bored and I didn’t even care about the characters. Took me a while to get through cause I was not enjoying it. I don’t know if it’s my reading slump or what but I feel like I have been so bored by every book I read lately :(

3.5 stars, pretty sophisticated for a mystery thriller, as most Scandinavian thrillers tend to be.
Listened to this on road trips with Dan. He enjoyed it, too.

Recommended by Bibi, and thought it would be a great read since it’s Winter and wanting a Mystery narrative while being cozy. I borrowed the Hard Print but didn’t like the uneven pages, which led me to borrow a paperback version.
There's not much to say about The Snowman but I thought it was… okay? I didn’t connect with the characters, but I was interested in the mystery, although I wasn’t as much of a fan of Nesbo’s writing. Mainly because of how he writes everyone as perverse and how he writes Katrina and the main detective, Harry Hole’s partner with whom he had a falling out. While the mystery was as engaging, I found myself feeling as uninterested as time went on until I was 350 pages into the book. Mysteries do have a purpose in building up to the bigger picture, though Snowman sort of lacked a bit of cohesion.
Very happy I got to read a recommendation due to my wanting to read books that are recommended to me.

A fairly standard but well-executed thriller.
I enjoyed the creepy Snowman motif and the distinctively Scandinavian setting, with its dense snowy forests and high ski slopes.
As a mystery, it is pretty basic; a number of red herrings and a standard 'it-was-the-doctor' resolution. The deduction was fairly sub-par, with the detectives constantly behind the ball. As a thriller, it was pretty engaging, and I finished this in more or less two sittings.
The plot centers around a misogynistic murderer who murders to kill 'whores'. As a motive, it is pretty histrionic, and fairly uninteresting woman-hating. The murderer's cold-blooded planning and execution makes up for the weakness of his motivations.

I have to admit that it did pick up some at the end, but most of the time I was just upset at how dumb some of the decisions and conclusions they came to were. Also, not that this is the mark of a bad mystery, but I did call the killer less than halfway through the book. It's a passably entertaining murder mystery filled with the obligatory twists and red herrings, but it was not my kind of book. Also, Harry Hole is such a bad name
