Very interesting. I could barely remember the plot of this one, read it so long ago, but enjoyed it immensely. Masterful writing and descriptions.

A page-turner, great combination of mystery, suspense and adventure. Arctic IGY scientists try to rescue survivors of a plane crash and get them to safety through -40°F and worsening weather, meeting some surprises (some deadly) along the way. Nearly a perfect novel; the only flaw for me was how many mistakes the hero kept making in guessing who might be a murderer; but then it wouldn't have been as good if solved too early. As it is, the action reaches a satisfying climax in good time.

The language was so beautiful I kept a notebook besides me while I read so I could write down the phrases I particularly liked. I love Allister Maclean.
The book basically is about a plane that has crash landed in the Arctic circle, and there are ten survivors. The protagonist is Dr. Peter Mason, a researcher spending six months in there, and he and the other researchers essentially save the passengers. They are thousands of miles away from civilization in frigid subzero temperatures with low equipment and low food (since there were only enough supplies to sustain the researchers).
If that wasn't bad enough, Mason explores the wreckage of the plane and sees that the pilots have been shot, meaning that one of the rescued passengers is the culprit. People start dying, their petrol supply is contaminated, their radio is tampered with and destroyed - the situation gets worse and worse while the passengers and researchers are stranded with a killer amongst them.
You'll grow to really like the characters and it's a shock to learn who the actual villain is

Quick review (12/17/22).
3.5 stars lowered to 3 stars.
Solid and thrilling story encumbered by lacking characterization and a sudden change in scope.

Words cannot describe how much I dislike the main character. The number of times Dr Mason calls himself an idiot is not enough. He's supposed to be a man of science, he's supposed to have analytical mind, yet all he does is jump into countless conclusions. No proof to back his assumptions? Who caaares! *points his loaded gun at every suspect* One of the villains calls him a "very brave man" at some point, which must have been a typo in the copy, and it should read "a very stupid man". There are also no other discernible characters who could distract the reader from the Mason-induced misery. The cast is either extremely stereotypical or completely flat. They barely interact with each other, 70% of the book are just Dr Mason going insane, the other 30% are taken up by needless wordy descriptions of the ice-cap, the noisy tractor, the cold, and random info dumps that added very little to the story.
