A bit of a roller coaster - started very much like 'five quarters of the orange'. I was a wee bit irked by the current story, will they... won't they, then again with the painting - is it... isn't it..... But overall enjoyable.

Loved this! I think I a new favorite author.

Slow, predictable, I felt obligated to finish it just to make sure it ended like I thought it would. It was a mildly enjoyable read. Didn't feel like it was a total waste of time but wouldn't read it again.

Fantastisk, absolut fantastisk.

Read this in a day. I love how she weaves through different time periods. Kept my interest. Beautiful story.

Hmmm. I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. The writing was good, and while the subject is almost over the top in drama - love and loss and death and war, all the major themes - I never rolled my eyes while reading (which happens more often than I'd like.)
That said, the emotional power of a painting was a little lost on me, despite everything it represented to the two protagonists in the book. It didn't really make sense to me that the modern day owner would react the way she did. Some of the reactions and interactions felt over the top. And I almost guessed at how it would end, but abandoned that idea because it seemed too far fetched... but it turned out I was right. And besides being far fetched, the ending was way too quick and tidy.
So I enjoyed it, but it's not something that sticks with me, or that I was especially sorry to come to the end of.
Now I'm deciding if I want to read the other books by Jojo Moyes.

I feel like Moyes tried very hard to be like Jodi Picoult with this novel, but didn't succeed at all - and I am not even that big Picoult fan, but at least her stories usually have some strong emotional impact. With this one... nothing mattered, honestly. The modern day part of the story was especially bad, all about telling and not showing, without even trying to flesh out the characters. It didn't help that the third-person narrative with present tense felt really jarring and distant, at least in finnish.
