Trey and Laurie’s story in The Bronc Rider Takes a Fall by Debra Holt, book three in The Tremaynes of Texas series, was a sweet, enjoyable, emotional, and heartwarming tale, that is about how appearances can be deceiving and how a shy girl’s secret teenage crush turns into forever. From the beginning, when Laurie falls into Trey’s arms, there was a chemistry and magnetism between these two; despite Laurie’s girlhood crush. Add in a little boy, TJ, wanting male attention, someone to do things with, and you have the setting for either the perfect relationship or a heart-breaking, disappointing. Watching the popular playboy bronc rider falling for the quiet, shy girl is quite delightful. I enjoyed seeing Trey out of his comfort zone, acting out of character without even realizing it; becoming a soft, caring and kind-hearted man. Laurie, a school teacher, taking over her grandfather’s store for the summer, has become a force of nature. The once quiet girl has left her shell behind to become a caring and protective mother to TJ, an amazing little boy who captures everyone’s heart.

Ms. Holt wrote a sweet, heartwarming romance filled with strong magnetism, sizzling chemistry, clever banter, and endearing secondary characters giving Trey and Laurie a chance for a future together, filled with love as well as a family for TJ. I highly recommend The Bronc Rider Takes a Fall to other readers and look forward to the next book in this series.

This is the third book in the series. Trey was on a winning streak until he is sidelined with an injury. He is staying at a friends cabin for some R&R so he an heal. He has a "meet cute" with Laurie when she literally falls into his arms. She is a single mom who doesn't so casual. Trey doesn't do serious. Despite their differences they are a perfect fit. Throw in a little hero worship from her son and you have yourself a triangle of sorts. How can she keep him at arms length when her son wants him around? How can he not think about forever when he is falling for the sweet single mom? Great read!

The more they protest, the harder they fall ....

Trey Tremaine is a world champion bronc rider who is one a medical leave of absence from the rodeo circuit. He is recovering from some serious injuries after the bronc decided to show him who is boss. Instead of staying at his family home, he has decided to borrow a cabin belonging to a friend not too far away.

Laura Wilkes has come back to help take care of her grandfather's store while he is taking a vacation/honeymoon. She and her young son are enjoying their break from their "real" world in the big city. Laura tries to stay immune to Trey's charms once she literally falls into his arms but realizes soon realizes that they were meant to be. Laura remembers Trey from their high school days.

Trey meets Laura when she falls into his arms falling off an old rickety ladder. He ends up taking Laura and her son fishing and both fall into the river. This is the start of the wonderful fast paced novella. It is a quick read so perfect for a rare rainy day or a day when you are trying to escape the heat of summer. Or if you just need a quick escape.

My only issue with the book is that it is a novella. Novellas do make for fast quick reads but I think longer novels allow for more action and character development.

I did receive a copy of this novella in advance from the publisher in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

This was an interesting read for me. I honestly felt as though a different author wrote this book than wrote the first two books in this series. The writing wasn’t bad. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters. There is just something about the writing style and flow that seemed totally different to me. On top of that, I felt there was a disconnect from the Tremayne family in this book.

Of course, Trey is a Tremayne. We see all of his siblings as well as his aunt. But the warmth and unity of this family didn’t shine through in this story. If someone were to pick it up as a standalone (which can most definitely be done with no problem) they would have no idea what his family had been through or how close and loving his family truly is with each other and those they consider family. There was a lot of telling and barely any showing.

Like I said, the characters are enjoyable. Both Laurie and Trey are very likable and they really compliment each other well. I have no problem with insta-love in most cases. Yet I found myself feeling more of that telling instead of showing when it came to their relationship. I believe if the characters would have actually spent more time together, I would be 100% all in on their relationship. The thing is, they never really had any sort of relationship other than a shaky friendship.

The point is, this story was all over the place and it never dove below skin surface with any of the issues facing these two characters. It’s almost as if every single thing they went through was a throw away issue, even when the issue was quite serious. The author never gave any one aspect enough attention, which really disappointed me. I really wanted to like this story more. I feel Laurie and Trey deserved a better telling of their road to an HEA.
