I dived into this book not knowing a single thing about it, other than it brought many to tears. I will say that that probably affected my reading experience waiting for this huge secret/tragedy to take place. And although, there are element's in this story that are going to affect a certain audience. I think I just got my expectations set on a certain scenario, that when it didn't happen I was like "oh, okay". I myself was not brought to tears, I found this book more along the lines of Adventurous, Feel Good, Romantic in the most Swoon-Worthy Sense!

This book was a solid 4 stars for me. Even though I wasn't brought to tears (like I was hoping), I still had a FANTASTIC time! J.T. does not seem capable of letting me down, she always writes these sexy MMC's that get my lady bits attention right away. The MMC, James, did not disappoint! This man whew! J.T. knows how to write a man....let me tell you. Also, I have to really highlight the FMC, Olivia. She is definitely my spirit animal in a lot of ways. I found myself chuckling and smiling like a fool throughout this book.

There were some quotes in here that just sung to my soul:
"I refuse to be a foregone conclusion."

"Don't you just hate it when a man opens his mouth and ruins everything?"

"One day they'll be like me, hurtling toward forty with stretch marks and wrinkles and a new compassion for others that only the decay of your own body and the weight of all your crushed dreams will bring..."

"What's wrong with red roses? Aren't they romantic?"
"Only to people lacking imagination. Real romantics never go for the cliché because passion is so utterly individual."

"...Life's too short to mince words. Our existence is measured in minutes. Seconds. Heartbeats. Time is the most valuable commodity we have, because it can never be replenished. Once it's gone...it's gone forever. And so are we."

"Duris dura fraguntur" Hard things are broken by hard things.

"Poison comes in so many sneaky forms, but pretty is the sneakiest."

"The days of you barking orders and me obeying them are long gone. You want me to jump for you now? I'm not asking 'How High?' I'm saying 'Show me the money, bitch' and negotiating price."

"There exists a field, beyond all notions of right and wrong. I will meet you there."

"...death is a friend we wait for. The merciful friend whose face we long to see."

*I still want to stress that just because I was not affected by certain elements in this story, I do believe it will be hard for others to read. Especially, those that have close experiences. If you have Triggers, I would suggest looking up TW so that when these little nuggets drop you aren't blindsided. But, if you're like me, I'd suggest diving in with an open mind and just settling in for a good time!

This was another enjoyable read by J.T., I am such a fan of hers and had a great time with this book!

I realized that the book was not going to be a traditional happily ever after and I was too invested in the characters to deal with that eventual sadness and frustration.

I was done with this book halfway through scene 1, but figured I better read the chapter at least to see if it gets any better. It happens! Not this time, though. This is my first and most likely last time reading this author.

I don't know if it's just this author's writing style, or trying to depict the FMC as a pretentious and aloof person, but I did NOT enjoy the prose. The FMC narrates like a film noir detective and it is not intriguing or entertaining enough to offset the annoying and off-putting dichotomy of the first scene (
the FMC touring an apartment while watching a couple across the way have sex through their window
)... it just felt so unserious and try-hard!

There is also a bit of exposition dumping in the dialogue, which I also don't like but tend to give a bit of leeway to because that part is difficult.

You can only be depressed for so long before people start rolling their eyes behind your back.

This is how I felt reading the dialogue, the FMC's inner thoughts, her narration, the description... close your eyes and throw a dart. There were some lines I found amusing, but they were repeated, which tired me.

Also, a pet peeve about bloom time: the FMC describes the sweet scent of cherry blossoms... in June. No, lol.

And another one:

He doesn't have an accent, French or otherwise.

Considering everyone has an accent... what does this man sound like?

DNF after Chapter 1. I am feeling the pull to read more, because I love complaining, but I don't hate myself enough to continue. I was able to get through the ACOTAR series because I was buddy reading it, but this was a solo endeavor.

I was tricked. Lied. Scammed. Robbed. Trolled. Bamboozled. Up to 70% is all smut I didn't cared about James or Olivia then that dumb twist ... I'm sure soap operas have better twists. One the worst epilogues I hate I read this book. BYE.
