This one is much, much better than the first novel based on the series. The writer captured Jack's voice and Owen's nagging, annoying self pride. Gwen is as annoying or fun depends on your liking of the character. Toshiko and Ianto are just scenery in this one as with the first book except for one tiny part for Ianto which is kinda of a replay of a scene late in the series involving Owen. I liked the plot of this one, the banter between the team. Made me want to pull out my disk and watch some Torchwood and Captain Jack.

Reread because I was in a reading slump, but I can't say it helped because I think this is my least favourite of the Torchwood novels. Same issues as I had last time I read it, but also other things. I don't think I'm a fan of Abnett's writing style, particularly his penchant for long, unnecessary lists of mundane things that I guess are supposed to help us picture the scene better? Dunno. When I was rereading this I was also watching the show, and it made me realise that I dot think his characterisation of the team, with the exception of maybe Gwen, was very good. They said things they wouldn't say, particularly Tosh, or do things they wouldn't do, like Owen.
Originally read 29-30th January, 2015 and given 4/5 stars.
Not half bad. Most of the story was over by halfway through, except for THAT ONE THING.
The addition of James felt like an Adam but this was much nicer than that episode. James didn't make Ianto think he'd murdered several people for one. I kinda sorta shipped Mr Dine and Shiznay (?) though.

Something is sending the people of Cardiff crazy. The Amok is causing riots and quite rightly- Torchwood are the ones to fix it.

I loved following the Torchwood team on their extended adventures- especially the original team. This novel had all the makings of a good case

Sometimes it just seemed too far fetched.

It was interesting to see how the team handled their minds being taken over by the Amok. It really showed how well they all work together as a team.

To say anything else would spoil the book because I feel to really get involved you need to immerse yourself in the story.

A little slow and confusing in places but a good read!

The book was disjointed and confusing. Too much going on and the ending did not feel like it tied it all up.

As I have already read most of the Torchwood books I would rate this as the least good one (it’s probably the worst).
The novel‘s plot does not really develop and it‘s like there are two stories following each other. And it‘s not thrilling like the other Torchwood books, it‘s obvious, miserably told and the characters are not authentic (worse than any fanfiction I ever read: like Jack binge-watching a TV-Series with the team... come on, this would never happen)
The new character and team member James who is just there and not introduced strongly reminded me of Adam...(guess what was the plot-twist...)
Also this novel is told around Gwen and how she out of the blue breaks up with Rhys to be with James. Which makes the story almost unreadable.

Between Adam and James, Torchwood gets duped-slash-infiltrated a lot.

It started out as extremely weird. The first 3/4 of the book, you're just thinking "Who the hell is James?!?" But it all got explained.

It had some interesting information here and there, but mostly, it was pretty lame.

So essentially this book has the same plot as one of the episodes, well plot, the same idea.
I do like this version more though, I would've loved it to see this as the actual episode.

The real episode made me feel so uneasy because the alien used them and I don't even know.. Here however, James is human, sort of. And he really is, he doesn't want to leave and accept that he might be different and that made it quite believable. I really loved the story.

I listened to this as an audio book, read by Eve Myles and let me just say, get the audio book. Man, I love Eve's voice. Yeah. I'm excited for more Torchwood books for me to read.
