I will open with agreeing that this book is not for everyone; there are some very rough scenes. With that said, the author has created characters that are irrevocably changed by those events which adds an element of realism that at times makes the story hard to read but impossible to put down.

Livvie is a normal eighteen year old girl just trying to survive the curve balls life keeps throwing at her. She never expected to become a victim of the sex slave market.

Caleb, on the other hand, has one thing on his mind: vengeance. He set his sights on Livvie with the intent to use her as a means to an end in his plot to exact his revenge. We later find out that Caleb was also a victim of the sex slave market and how it shaped him into the man he is now.

Livvie is determined to not let Caleb break her. Caleb is determined to bend Livvie to his will at all costs. Neither of them expected to develop feelings for the other one. Livvie questions her sanity and whether or not she is suffering from Stockholm syndrome. Caleb doesn’t understand why Livvie makes him feel things he never expected to feel or why he is questioning using her for his vengeance.

As I stated before, this book is dark and gritty but underneath it all is a story of two people that could be so right for each other that it’s almost incomprehensible that they had to meet under such horrible circumstances. At the end of this installment, Caleb is gripped by internal turmoil and we do not know if he will go forward with his plan for revenge or try to foster a relationship with Livvie.

Huh. I am nearly wordless and extremely confused. This book is very dark. Be sure to check your triggers. I am unsure if I’ll be able to read the second book. Beware book 1 ends on a cliffhanger. I want to know what happiness but I don’t think I care enough to find out.

Olivia is 18 with absent parents. Caleb had a horrible childhood and life. He kidnaps Olivia and for some forsaken reason, Olivia falls in love with her captor. I feel like this is romanticizing trafficking.

I love dark romance and dark books in general, but I was not a fan of this one.

“You're not a damsel in distress and I'm not the handsome prince come to save you.”

This is my first book review, what a book to pick, right?

I’m still fairly new to the romance genre. In the last year, a good friend of mine revealed she was a secret romance-novel blogger and I found myself introduced to a whole new book world. I had just finished a string of sweet, swooning novels and during a conversation with said friend, she commented: “I think you need to change up your romance subgenre and try something darker”. This brought me to [b:Captive in the Dark|12513614|Captive in the Dark (The Dark Duet, #1)|C.J. This book is not for everyone. I don’t even know if this book is for me. It was well written, dark, tragic, traumatizing, intriguing, beautiful and horrifying. It left me feeling too many contradicting emotions and not having the means or words to fully express them. Speechless with a need to internally process what I had experienced. I don’t think I will be able to decide how I feel about this book anytime soon.

Did I like it? I don’t know. Did I dislike it? I don’t know. Do I regret reading it? Absolutely not!

I’m not going to recap the story, the book blurb does a perfect job of letting you know what you are in for. I would recommend this book to anyone who can handle dark and extreme content looking for not only a book but an experience.

I want to know what happens to Livvie and Caleb. [b:Seduced in the Dark|13612739|Seduced in the Dark (The Dark Duet, #2)|C.J. Roberts|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1335114363l/13612739._SX50_.jpg|19212100] here I come!

Ridiculous.

Overall, a dark yet intriguing story in development. I enjoyed, quite literally, feeling the chemistry amongst the main characters. Cannot wait to continue in the next book! Would recommend, although it would definitely be a Mature or “R” book for language use and sexual content.
