adrian ivashkov where are yoooouuuuuu

I am so glad i chose to give this series a chance. When I read Vampire Academy a while back I didn't get too into it, I felt like something was missing - but at the same time there was something in the book that kept me reading. Frostbite was so good! It was fun, sad and exciting. I didn't get into the book at first, since I couldn't remember everything from the first book - but eventually I catched on. Hopefully it won't be a long time until i read the third book!

Signs that you’re officially an adult: you relate to the adult characters more than the teenagers.

There is no book that is truer for than this one. Normally, I get the teenage perspective. I don’t always agree with it, but I get it. Not so here. Rose and her friends/frenemies are idiots. The actions they take in this book belong on the Darwin awards and it absolutely broke my suspension of disbelief that any of them survived this exercise in stupidity. It was like watching one of those horror movies where you’re yelling at the screen for the girl to not go into the room, but she does anyway.

I don't like those movies so, unsurprisingly, I didn’t like this book.

It certainly didn’t help that my issues from the first book carried over in a big way because, while the world of vampire academy seems fascinating, the series largely ignores that. The vampires in this thing literally have magic powers, but we almost never see them. Instead we get love triangles and romance drama between the two leads and, let me tell you, if there’s one type of relationship I am rarely able enjoy it’s teacher/student ones. This book is one of the worst I’ve had the misfortune to read, too.

Rose, the leading lady, is juvenile, impulsive to a fault, and has the decision making skills of a lemming. There is nothing about her character that makes me view her as mature for her age and I cannot believe that Dimitri, her teacher and love interest, has feelings for her that are anything beyond lust. Mind you, the same goes for Rose. She barely even knows the man beyond their training sessions. How in the world am I supposed to believe she’s in love with anything but her own fantasy of him? I can forgive a 17-year-old child for that, but the 24-year-old man? Him I’m judging. He should be more than capable of controlling himself by that age.

I can’t even ignore the creepy romance in favor of the plot because, like the first book, this thing barely has a plot. There’s some loosely connected events that result in a final climax, but they’re hardly the focus of the story. They barely qualify as a sub-plot. Add in lots of poorly developed political drama and I think I’m done with this series. I have no idea why it’s so popular, but then I never got the Twilight hype either.

I tried something different this time and made notes as I read! So this is a full ⚠️spoiler⚠️ review but I’ll say right now that THIS WAS A VERY GOOD BOOK IN TERMS OF DEVELOPMENT!

- Jealousy that she can’t fuck lissa? I’m very confused. (After finishing the book I can say she is just battling jealousy of not being her friends soul form of attention, and this can become very real when a best friend of yours gets into a relationship)
- Lissa is a cunt, her friend literally saw a murder scene and she can’t keep her hands off her boyfriend for two seconds (yep, I said it)
- This girl can’t seriously not know where the heart is (come on dude)
- Mason is Misogynistic (this definitely fades over time but it was something that was dominated in his personality at the start)
- If a dhampier got agressive and joined the side of the strogoi they could literally use a stake in the shield and doom everyone
- I don’t know if it’s how mead writes dialogue but why does rose sound so dumb when what she is saying is so profound? Maybe they are trying to make her seem young but it has an adverse affect (at the start of the book it did but, like mason, develops over time)
- Really enjoying her development on the “blood whore” ideals. I’m happy to see rose defending them
- And then she goes and slut shames her mum... lovely
- Oh my fucking god “I had a black eye. A freaking black eye” WOWOW SO HARD TO BE A LITERAL DEFENDER OF EVIL BUT YOU HAVE A BLACK EYE (I still can’t get over this, her mum physically abuses her and she is cut because of her freaking looks are tarnished)
- I like that she was ready to go for mason, I get annoyed by characters trying to “ignore” or pretend they don’t feel for someone. Her blunt nature is nice
- I’d be so down for a lesbian relationship I would BE SO DOwn
- This is fucking weird my dude (the looking into Lisa’s mind when she was with Christian, very weird)
- The fuck is a whole school going on a skiing trip (like, how?)
- Really loving this character development
- Her built up secrets forming into random aggression at her friends and colleagues is very real. I’ve been in that same position so I can connect on that level
- Her trying to “use” Adrian (who is obviously using her) to get back at dimitri is just screaming “LOOK HOW CHILDISH AND BABY I AM WAAA WAAA” like, girl, have some self respect (I think this has SOMTHING to do with her taking Lossa’s “shadows” so, it is something I will keep in mind when she has childish fits)
- Everyone knows the second the main character says “there probably isn’t much alcohol in this” they are going to get plastered. UGH SO FRUSTRATING
- Wow and then she comes in with the incredible development stoping and fight between two morri with great points
- Aye mason didn’t use rose while she is drunk so that’s a plus (sad that at this point CONSENT is a plus

If I had to retitle this book, it wouldn't be Frostbite. It would be Cringe Attack, because there were so many moments of secondhand embarrassment, I practically had to read through my fingers. And yet...I devoured it in four hours.

Frostbite raises the stakes in all the right ways. The plot is faster, the threats more intense, and Rose finally starts maturing into the protector we know she is destined to be. Her character development in this book is strong. She's still impulsive and firey, but there's a new weight to her choices that makes her arc hit harder.

The real standout for me was the storyline with Rose and her mother. That emotional tension built so well over the course of the book and when it hit, it hit. I cried. Add to that the heartbreak of Rose finally accepting that she and Dimitri can't be together, and you've got a surprisingly heavy emotional punch for a book I frequently called "cringe city."

The tone definitely darkens in this one, but Mead handles it well. It never feels heavy-handed or out of place--just more serious, more dangerous, and more real. The humor is still there when it needs to be, and the pacing never lets up.

I'm already into Book 3 and fully hooked. Highly recommend this one if you liked Vampire Academy. The series just keeps getting better.
