This whole review will be a spoiler as the twist if you will was obvious by the first page.
Spoiler
It was obvious very quickly that the plague was fake and that it was only designed to keep the country under control. There was never much doubt about that even though the characters were a bit slow on the uptake. The characters were fun and I like how the friendship was central. I wish it had not developed into romance and there are few books were boys and girls are just friends. The ending was also rushed. I do not think the townspeople would have let go our their racism so easily and no country just returns slaves. I undermined much of the message about racism/prejudice that everyone was just all great at the ending. Though, it is a children's book.
Not my favorite by this author.
It's hard for me to put my finger on why I didn't enjoy this one as much. There were things I really liked and times I was really invested, but for a large portion of the book, I felt like I was just pushing through to finish.

Extremely meh.
This book wasn't horrendous, but it took me two weeks to read because I was so uninterested and it is NOT a large book, so I'm erring on the side of 2 stars.
I picked up The Scourge because I always want to read about plagues, but it was obvious from the first few chapters that there was no real plague. This was billed as YA, but reads a lot more like a young reader book. The plot is simple and obvious, and the worldbuilding was probably done with about 4 of those oversize LEGO blocks. Weevil and Ani could have been interesting characters but unfortunately, surrounded by such a stick-figure plot and setting, their antics were only annoying.

A great middle school thriller with humor, daring and justice. Told by the incorrigible Ani from the river country, readers learn how hated the river people are in the country of Keldon. Essentially scapegoats, they are blamed for all the country's ills, most especially for the deadly outbreak of The Scourge. Ani and her best friend Weevil quickly come to find that the deadly disease is less frightful than the true origins of the outbreak.
Ani and Weevil are a force to be reckoned with and their constants exploits and escapes will keep readers highly entertained and eager to see how Ani will triumph. Jennifer Nielsen delivers another fantastic middle school fantasy novel.

Another jaw-dropping good novel from Nielsen. Again I find myself immersed in her world, her characters, and her story! Oddly similar to some of the circumstances the world has been through in the last few years which I found very interesting. But all in all, I loved this read!
Content: Whipping, mentioned kiss, kiss (a little too descriptive for me), romantic touch, poisoning.

I have no tolerance for stupid characters making stupid choices for stupid reasons.
Peace out.
