The graphics were beautiful! Such wonderful pictures and altogether amazing to look at, but there was no actual storyline. The ending was just that: it ended with no real description of what might happen next. It was just a snippet of a story but I didn’t know what that story was. It was a quick read but didn’t have much depth.
Perfect for a quick read.

A super biased opinion, but I read this book during a very difficult time in my life and it almost felt like talking to an old friend, or listening to a very personal and hopeful story.

if my neighbor totoro was a coming of age story. i enjoyed the mundane themes but the main character was a bit too unlikable for me to get behind. it's pretty good overall but i also feel like it was a bit pointless even though that's somewhat ironically the point.

This was a beautiful book and a really quick read! Windy is also SO damn cute and reminds me a lot of myself when I was around that age. This story follows Rose and Windy, two preteen BFFs who usually link up in the summer when their families come to the beach for vacation. Summer has been weird for them both this year, with a lot of family turmoil and self-discovery getting in the way of their typical easy summers. They fill their days with swimming, horror movies, and snooping on older kids, while navigating becoming teenagers themselves and all the uncertainty surrounding that transition.

I reached for this book after I found out it was the most challenged book of 2016 in the American Library Association's annual Top Ten Challenged Books list and was pulled from several school and public libraries across the country. So that obviously caught my attention. I am also a huge fan of coming-of-age stories, which for some reason just translate REALLY well to graphic novels, so this book took absolutely no effort for me to get into.

I feel like, for once, this graphic novel was spot-on with the preteen dialogue and mannerisms; it really took me back to being that age, with stuff I feel like I would've really said when I was 12 and feelings I definitely would have had, which is something I really love when I read stuff like this!! It really highlights that bittersweet, fleeting period right before summer's over, blending the dread of a new school year and the desperation to resist change. You also have a lot to gain from observing the facial expressions and tiny details in the artwork. I HAVE to read more stuff by the author and illustrator now (who are cousins, btw!). 10/10!!

I was really hoping to get swept up in this. The art is incredible, but the story just isn't there. There's no plot and, honestly, there's not even much character. There are primarily two events that are going on in this story that the protagonist is kind of distantly aware of. Neither of those pieces really hit their stride until 200 or so pages in. And I found that the dialogue that was used was not as essential as it should be, considering this is a graphic novel and it's just pictures + words. I'm sad about it :/

why has almost every graphic novel ive read recently been about shitty people being shitty - i miss learning from these and not leaving them feeling gross
