This is, quite simply, a book that EVERYONE should read.
Ultra Processed People shines a light on the modern food industry, highlighting how a large part of most people’s diet isn’t actually food, but “manufactured edible substances”.
It makes complete sense when you take a second to think about it, and it becomes scary when you take a second to look at the ingredients list on 95% of food you’d find in a supermarket. Preservatives, emulsifiers, flavourings. Our “food” has been systematically stripped back and reconstructed in deeply unrecognisable ways whilst remaining familiar and even attractive to us.
The book is well researched, well narrated and incredibly thought provoking.
I’m left with the same feeling I have after watching a David Attenborough documentary; enlightened, empowered, but ultimately very sad about the state of the world.

Good book but felt like it could’ve been shorter than it was. He drives the point home, but I got the point with the first few examples.

Read this (audiobook) for a book group. Was sceptical and not looking forward to it, but found it to be very good. Some solid science in there, accessible, many different strands and ideas throughout. I learned loads and it’s made me think differently about what I eat, and make some changes. I’ve read critics who say they don’t agree with the core idea - but there’s no one core idea, there are loads and many are grounded in science, or say he’s telling us what to eat - but he clearly states several times he’s not doing so, and he’s not saying we should stop eating UPF. What he wants is for us all to have freedom, ability and knowledge to make choices about what to eat.
Audiobook very well narrated by the author and I enjoyed the bonus tracks of conversations between him and his brother. Highly recommend.
