I wanted to like this book so much that I am actually sad at the possibilities and options this author squandered. The premise is good, the descriptions and world building are decent, but all the characters are assholes ESPECIALLY the two main characters.

Usually, when I read, I can’t wait to get home and get back to my favorite chair and my latest book. I first realized I hated this book when I got to my chair-time and I chose to watch reruns of The Vampire Diaries on Netflix rather than read.

Annika has literally NO redeeming qualities. There is nothing likable about her. She drinks, smokes, picks fights with elves in a bar when they have all been so gracious to her and she is a stranger in their land. She is mouthy and pushy and VERY immature even for 25.

Her “love interest” is just as bad, though I would take him over her any day. He is equally immature but he is supposedly 300 years old WTF?

Portals to the outside world are closing for some unknown reason and she is supposedly devastated and desperate to get home.......aaaaaand yet no one actually does shit to figure out what the hell is happening. Instead they plan and have a weird birthday party for the first 60 percent of the book. One second Annika is crying into her beer about her poor family, the next she is trying to bone some strange elf on the floor of a music room in a house that she is a GUEST in.....not to slut shame, but have some class.

I have to be honest I am only about 70 percent through this book and I have read some folks saying there is gratuitous (and possibly light BDSM) sex in this book but other than some awkwardly weird foreplay (honey pot and nectar gross) that got interrupted the only other “sex” I have come across was extremely vague and weird.

All this supposed build up and then suddenly she is like “let’s have sex” and he says “okay” and the author basically writes: then they had sex.

No passion, no buildup, not even any description...I’m not a perv that reads these books just for the hot parts but I honestly feel weird that their first time getting it on wasn’t even in the book. I feel strangely gypped. I need to reassess my life now.

All in all, I want to find the artist that did the covers to this series of books because that person owes me restitution for the time I wasted on this book. The cover art is so gorgeous and alluring that I expected so much more.

I did not expect to like this book as much as I did.
First of all...when I started reading it I thought to myself..."oh shit... is this YA? Will this book end up getting me frustrated?" The answer to that is NO!!!! this is NOT YA!!!
GLORY GLORY HALLELUJAH!!

This is not Fever or Lord of the Rings, BUT this book has all the fun, witty, angst and spunk of people in there mid- 20s with ALL the perks of being in your 20s!!! (Yes, I mean sex).
Now...I should mention that I LOVE paranormal fantasy realms. The world we are introduced to is awesome with vampires, elves (my weakness), fairies, druids and then some special to this book species...which our main character happens to be.
The storyline does start and stop a bit...and has a very "fellowship of the ring" vibe as they set off on their adventure (which takes a bit long to get moving), but for the most part I enjoyed the lighter quality of the book. I thought the ending did kind of come to a quick finish, especially as it felt like we were being led to a huge battle.
All in all...I bought the rest of the series...I can't stand leaving anything unfinished and it made me laugh and kept my attention with the secondary characters plot-lines as well as the MCs.

This book has me so conflicted! it definitely sucked me in with the fact that it’s a dark, paranormal romance. Like umm yes please! The world building is really amazing. There are so many different characters, so many different fantasy elements. I mean the story has wood nymphs, elves, vampires, fairies, pixies, druids, wolves, humans. Basically everything you could want. I loved that. The story itself is about Annika, a human who finds herself trapped in a different world with all of the magical creatures she never believed existed. Of course there’s love, lust, intrigue, drama, a prophecy, and a dangerous journey in the mix. So what’s my issue exactly?

The book needs a lesson in pacing I think. It was so slow to start, picked up, slowed down, and picked up again. Add to that the fact that it’s descriptive heavy and I had a tough time getting through some chapters. I adored Talvi! But I wasn’t a big fan of how the book portrayed his character. One minute Annika loved him , the next someone was telling her how awful he was. I enjoyed his character more than hers and that annoyed me a bit. Now for some things I did like!

I really loved the language used in the book and the way all the fantasy creatures spoke. It was very old timey, melodic, soft, and intelligent. Even the scenes with sex were written this way and I think it made them so powerful. I loved the story line of a prophecy unfolding, it added a much needed mystery to things. And I really loved the perspective of all the fantasy creatures when it came to how humans lived. The book definitely has some issues, but overall it’s definitely worth a try. Let me know what you think if you do decide to pick it up!
