This novel, written by a particle physicist, is about Mattia and Alice, two kids, scarred by their childhood tragedies, and outcasted by the world.
The book gets its title from Mattia, a gifted child and a mathematical wizard. For Mattia, he and Alice are human versions of twin prime numbers, fitting perfectly as the missing pieces in each other’s lives. But, like twin prime numbers there is always a limit to their closeness and they could never be truly together.

“Mathematicians call them twin primes: pairs of prime numbers that are close to each other, almost neighbors, but between them there is always an even number that prevents them from truly touching. Numbers like 11 and 13, like 17 and 19, 41 and 43. If you have the patience to go on counting, you discover that these pairs gradually become rarer. You encounter increasingly isolated primes, lost in that silent, measured space made only of ciphers, and you develop a distressing presentiment that the pairs encountered up until that point were accidental, that solitude is the true destiny. Then, just when you’re about to surrender, when you no longer have the desire to go on counting, you come across another pair of twins, clutching each other tightly. There is a common conviction among mathematicians that however far you go, there will always be another two, even if no one can say where exactly, until they are discovered.”
The story starts from their childhood and continues till the later stages of their lives. I enjoyed the story before Mattia’s departure and the commentary on prime numbers. But it lost its charm in the second half as there was no character growth, several ideas were built up and then completely abandoned especially the part where Alice saw the girl in the hospital. As for Mattia, his decision at the end did not make any sense except that I believe he was not sure about Alice. I liked Alice’s character better but she too was selfish as she only wanted to be on the receiving end in her relationship with Fabio.
Overall, the title is really interesting but the story was not as flowy as it should have been. Although the book is translated from Italian, the translation is flawless.

El libro está bien, eso para empezar. Lo peor han sido las expectativas por el bombo y platillo que ha tenido este título, que tanto me gusta y tan rimbombante es, tanto título como estilo en ciertas ocasiones.
Otra cosa es lo que trata, que a mi modo de leer, está muy bien, REALMENTE bien: el tratamiento de las relaciones, la misma (in)madurez y lo inacabados que están ambos protagonistas. La soledad que orbita en el libro constantemente.
Y bueno de eso va, de cómo la superficie es tan de libro juvenil adolescente, (me ha recordado demasiado a las Ventajas de ser un Marginado en ciertos aspectos y momentos) pero en el fondo va de la más absoluta incomprensión. Y de distancias.

Ho letto questo libro due volte. La prima volta avevo 16/17 anni e mi ricordo che il libro non mi era piaciuto per nulla, ogni pagina mi metteva a disagio, quasi mi disgustava, non riuscivo a comprendere quel bisogno di solitudine dei due protagonisti. Innocentemente credevo che in storie come queste i personaggi siano destinati a mettersi insieme, perché interpretavo il bisogno di Alice e Mattia di cercarsi come un desiderio di completarsi a vicenda.
La seconda volta che ho letto il libro, qualche anno dopo, mi sono resa conto di quanto la solitudine invece fosse totalizzante, un confine costruito che non si lascia oltrepassare da nessuno. Un mondo proprio e individuale dove l'unico riscatto sembra essere la fotografia per Alice e la matematica per Mattia, ma forse più che essere una liberazione, le due discipline sono delle gabbie che distanziano ancora di più i due dal mondo. E il costante inseguimento dei due è sì un bisogno di calore umano, di affetto, ma sempre nella prospettiva di due numeri primi gemelli, sempre vicini ma destinati e non unirsi mai.
Una sensazione che non è cambiata nella lettura del libro è il disagio provato nella prima parte, dove viene raccontata la vita dei protagonisti dall'infanzia alle scuole superiori. Ma se durante la prima lettura del libro la sensazione di disagio era superficiale, quasi disinteressata, la seconda volta mi ci sono immersa completamente, quasi autoinfliggendomi la sofferenza di Alice e Mattia.
Sono state pagine lette in apnea, velocemente, quasi di fretta, per non lasciarmi sopraffare dalla crudeltà che può esserci tra adolescenti
