I guess I am more than a little disappointed in the ending of the novel. Although I loved Giordano's style of writing and compelling descriptions of the interior lives of people emotionally shattered by devastating childhood trauma, I expected some revealing event at the end to resolve the plot.
That said, there are some truly magnificent passages in his writing that I found myself underlining simply because they succinctly express universal truths about the human experience.

The first two chapters of the The Solitude of Prime Numbers were my favourite and led me to think that it would be a series of short stories about tragic stories of little girls. It was a shame for me then that it turned into a sort of slice of life aborted love story. It also irritated me that time jumps were used at times to avoid actually explaining things such as how Alice got back down from the mountain after breaking her leg.
The years of circling each other followed by nothing really happening was realistic as was having no answer to whether or not Alice did see Michela however it also wasn't particularly satisfying. I found both Alice and Mattia's misery a bit flat and at times they seemed to lack depth.
Overall just not my favourite genre, but I do think the writing was quite good, especially considering it had been translated from Italian.

Don't get the hype. Thoroughly disappointing book despite the interesting premise. Found the characters to be entirely unlikable and very maddening. They were not tragic through uncontrollable circumstances but rather through their own stubborn idiocy and over dramatization of the stuff most kids face. Cringe worthy to the extreme. Annoyed with myself for finishing it. But hey, maybe I'm shallow. ;)
