I would say there isn't much new in this book if you've watched The Social Dilemma and are aware that our devices and the internet are making us all more distracted. But it's a good summary all in one place, and for me, it was a good "pep talk" reminding us why these things are a problem and as motivation to stick with implementing changes in our lives.
I also can never resist a "this is how I disconnected from my phone/the internet and what it did to my life" story, and this delivered on that.

Thought-provoking exploration of the multiple ways we are set up to fail when trying to focus. It had me vowing to change my social media habits, then veering into - yikes! Everything is wrong with our world.

Absolutely incredible. Thoroughly researched, articulated with clarity, empathy and hope. Johann is such an insightful human being that is truly seeking to make the world a better by understanding as much as he can. It doesn’t beat you over the head with its message, but doesn’t shy away from the disparity of the situation.

This was fantastic! I was captivated from the beginning. This was not written as a “self help” book or a “how to” but more of a journey, a narrative that has many look out point for self reflection. Outstanding! I have had a lot of DNF books this year, and I thought this would be in that pile due to it being nonfiction and potentially more “ brainy” than I was ready for. I listened to this on audio and I intend to by a copy to highlight and flag.

My hopes were high for this one, but I gave up halfway through. Other books have covered this territory—and far better in my view. Many sentences are downright clunky, and passive voice is rampant. Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked by Adam Alter is a better book.

Some things that really stuck with me: social media is psychologically designed to keep you scrolling and coming back for more, mind wandering is important- it helps you focus better later, and your brain needs sleep and downtime to replenish and make connections, both of which are in shorter and shorter supply as time has marched on.

Would recommend. Refreshing to see someone else reach the same conclusion that Devon Price reached in his book "Unlearning Shame": That individuals should not be blamed for systemic problems.
This is not a self help book, it's a societal help book, based on the author's research. And it reveals *a lot* that many people don't know or don't see. So, definitely worth a read to anyone who wants to understand the depth of the attention problem we're dealing with.
