Engaging story with vivid historic portrayal. I enjoyed the story but thought reader was left hanging on a couple of the story threads.
4.5 stars. I really enjoyed the historical sections and mostly enjoyed the current sections. I grew a bit exhausted with Everly after a while but it came around by the end.
I’ll absolutely loved this story! Having visited Savannah several months ago, I felt as if I was walking through the streets of this beautiful city along with the characters. I even pulled out my Savannah guidebook and looked up certain places as they were mentioned in the book. This story will stay with me a very long time! I will probably also reread it!
I liked the weaving of present day with the past to unravel the truth behind the mystery of the Pulaski. Something about the writing (and possibly how it was read aloud since I listened to the audiobook) made it hard for me to truly get into. Plus, I feel like the ending was forecasted for most of the book. I was between three and four stars.

Book club pick. Otherwise I would not have read
Blech. Read for a book club. Did mostly audio because the story is treacle and it did not warrant reading on the page. The narrator does several very bad southern accents, so over the top that I was reminded of the old Carol Burnett "Gone With the Wind Sketch" and felt compelled to go to YouTube and watch it. While it hasn't aged well in some respects, I laughed hard. Published in 2021, this book has no good excuse for it's clumsy handling of slavery history and race.
I wanted to LOVE this book and I did at first. Too many stories, too much baggage for the present day characters. Heavy handedness by the author and lots of repetition. I would have preferred just the story about the shipwreck. I will say the author did a great job of making you feel the horror and tragedy telling the story as the shipwreck victims waited to be rescued.
This might be one of my all time favorite books! This is Patti Callahan's best book yet! I loved the storyline and the duel timelines. I loved these characters and felt all of their emotions! This was one of those books that I kept devouring because I loved it but also didn't want it to end! I can't wait to go to Savannah and see some of these things for myself!
4.5- I really enjoyed this book. The dual timelines were good. I listened to the audio book on my way home from Savannah with a friend. My only complaint is that the ending was a little too pat- especially since one of the main points of the book was that things don’t always end the way we want them to or even in a way that makes sense. Would absolutely recommend this book.
