This book was a pleasant recovery from the first one. I will say I missed the period of time after I read a book when I usually write my reviews so this will be decently more vague than usual as my thoughts are stale.
I really liked the perspective additions and how Gillig explored Elspeth’s circumstances and journey without having a cop out. Elm was a huge highlight in this book and I was very invested in his plot the entire way through. This book built up tension much better than the first and closed up the duology in a very satisfying way.
Here’s my main gripe with the series: SHE SHOULDVE WAITED. GOSH. Can you imagine how amazing this duology would’ve been if Ms Rachel had simply waited to have Ravyn and Elspeth admit their feelings until the end of this book?? The payoff would’ve been incredible and she could’ve still kept in the romantic bits in the last one but like more ‘does he actually like me’ ‘that was a mistake’ ‘everyone knows but us’ ‘but wait! it’s too late, I can’t tell her I love her anymore!’ LIKE COME ON. But, alas, not everyone is as much of a sucker for a slow burn as I am.
Anyway, besides that, I liked Ravyn and Elspeth’s dynamic, and I LOVED the focus on Nightmare. His relationship with Elspeth was so cute and I really wished it was focused on more. He was also just hilarious and I had a wonderful time imagining a deep male voice talking through Elspeth’s body.
I think the story came really full circle, no obvious plot holes or gaps, everything was dealt with and addressed! This one was a lot of fun and I found myself thinking about the characters awhile after I finished it: if there is one GREAT thing about this duology is that it has super well written characters. They are all entertaining and very distinct, albeit cliches of course, but not dull by any means.
This duology was simple and fun, with limited commitment and a nice ending. I definitely think it had so much more potential but I enjoyed the routes it took.
