So far this was the hardest book I have ever read. It set up many of the political stands of the characters.... I enjoy this series but now understand why so many people I know agree, that of the series so far, this is the first real test fans of the books get.

I am spoiled and marathoned the HBO series shortly before Season 3's end. Many events of this book were combined or deleted from the show. it was nice to see certain plot points that were altered in it's original form and context, making it easier to follow the political points much easier.

I have found that many of my favorite characters are the ones with the harder stories to tell. I also have a greater admiration for Sansa Stark, this is only the beginning of the suffering she may endure.

I cannot say more about this book without giving too much away and I want to keep my reviews as spoiler free as possible.

Could be blasphemy to rate a book in this series so low but my biggest gripe is that there's always so much going on in the middle of the book that the central focus is lost. It wasn't until I got to the end that I remembered why this book might have been separated from the rest in the series. Otherwise it's just a bunch of separate plots just moving without any indication if they're moving towards something.

Definitely enjoyed this one more than the first and once I got in to it I couldn't put it down. However it did take me a couple of hundred pages to get into it, maybe because of its size and the prospect of getting through all 900 pages of it. But once I got past the halfway mark I sped through it and loved every point of view when before I favoured some chapter over others. Tyrions sense of humour has not let me down to yey.

At the end I did find some of the battle at Kingslanding hard to follow which may have been my lack of knowledge when it comes to ships. And I was slightly disappointed when it came to Denys chapters which I really enjoyed in the first book but I found that her and her dragons did little in this book.

Overall it was an epic read and I loved the fact that the different gods played a bigger part in the story and the backstories that we never get to see in the tv show. I really enjoyed the introduction to wargs and Giants and everything that lies beyond the wall and I can't wait to continue on with the series:)

George R.R. Martin feeds your Game of Thrones novel obsession with the second book in the series - A Clash of Kings. Perfect reading for election time, this book shows the chaos, pain, death and ambition of upstarts, pretenders, legitimate heirs and otherwise as they all clash for supremacy. As hundreds and thousands suffer and die from warfare in pursuit of the Iron Throne you see the chess like moves that strengthen and weaken, showing nobility, raw ambition and opportunism. Necessary reading for those sucked into the violent and mysterious world of the seven kingdoms, of Westeros and the Dothraki, of Valyrian steel and dragons, and of the Iron Throne.
