That ending NOOOO! I don't believe it. Where is book two?!?! Kami loves Jared and Jared love Kami done. End of story.
Just as good as the last time - time to finally read the others.
I'm really liking this trend of strong female leads in young adult fantasy lately--it seems as though the grip of Bella Swan is really waning, which is nothing but good news. Plus, the fantasy elements in here completely avoid the typical werewolf/vampire urban fantasy fodder.
I really liked Kami Glass in here. She's smart and sassy, and does quite a bit of taking charge in here. There is a downside in that everyone has a similar voice to her--they all seem to have a smart quip or sarcastic remark at the ready, similar to how Joss Whedon has a habit of writing. The tone is pretty dark in here, so the light-hearted dialogue did keep it from getting too brooding. It still had a fairly Gothic feel to it all around, both in story and themes.
This is more romance-heavy than I was expecting. The angle of the romance was a lot different than anything I've seen done before. I don't want to give anything away on that front, but it's not the typical young adult romance, that's for sure.
The ending! I was a little worried from some reviews that this would be a cliffhanger ending, but for the most part things are tied up in here (good, because I hate cliffhanger endings). The main mystery is resolved, but there's plenty at the end to make me really want book two to be out now.

If I had to summarize what I felt for this book, I would go on for hours on how much I loved Kami, the depth of all of the characters, the writing, and the hilarious dialogue. However, after finishing it, reading that last chapter, I realize I only have two words.
Screw Jared.

Funny, creepy, atmospheric, and terrific characters. So excited about this new series. Read the full review at Slatebreakers: http://slatebreakers.com/2012/11/26/review-unspoken-by-sarah-rees-brennan/
I just couldn't put this down. The twists and turns and oh goodness the ending ugh so good and I just want the second book now because I need to know what happens next.
Kami has had a voice in her head her whole life - a voice that finally gets a face when her town's ruling family comes back to roost. Navigating this new and strange relationship while trying to discover what everyone is hiding keeps Kami on her toes, but when people start dying the stakes have never been higher. The setting and the characters will just draw you in. The writing is magical and the story is stunning.

I love British comedies, so I thought the characters and repartee in this book wonderful and a lot of fun! It was kind of delightful to read because of this, even despite the little bit of the more overwrought teen love/angst (which is to be expected from this kind of book anyway.) I kind of can't wait for the next one to come out because I want to see both where the story goes and because it was a really fun, fast read. *mystical lemonade dance*
I loved the author's Demon's Lexicon series so, so much that the first time I tried to read this book, I was really disappointed. The first part goes on too long; the boy and girl have a telepathic bond and they don't know why and there's spooky stuff about the ruling family that comes back to their grand house in the Cotswolds. Eh. I'm sort of over Gothic romance in general since going through a big Daphne DuMaurier/Victoria Holt stage in my 20s. (Which is longer ago now than I care to think about.)
But thankfully there are no governesses here and Brennan is always very witty and then once the magic really got going in, say the last 2/5 of the book, it was an irresistible page turner. (You know how Milne says "What do Tiggers like best? Tiggers like malt"? Well, what do Ariels like? They like books about MAGIC. Good ones!) Anyway, now I can't wait for the sequel.
