I love Anne Bishop and her stories. I'm really enjoying her new series a ton!
So good
So many layers of things going on. This book has so much packed in it feels like it should have been 700 pages to treacle all of it. Somehow, the story moves at an even pace and keeps the reader interested. Meh is still coping with a new life and it makes her a bit wishy washy. Simon is even more confused. I am excited to see what happens there.

Re-read
This was a fantastic second novel following Written in Red. Tensions are high and they are building up to an eventual conflict between HFL and the Terra Ingene. I loved seeing how Meg has made a place for herself and she and Simon are building bridges that are very much needed. We have a bit of an into to others outside the Lakeside Courtyard as others are drawn into what is being done with the cassandra sangue. This novel has such a great cast of characters. You may not love them all, but they are very well written and defined.
Meg the Trailblazer, indeed.

Meg the Trailblazer, indeed.
Meg, a human blood prophert, escaped her controllers and found sanctuary with the others.
Now there drugs are appearing that affect both humans and others. One turns them extremely vicious, the other completely placid. Tensions are skyrocketing between the humans and others. Can humans live in peace with the others? Well some can, but is it only the sub-category of intuit humans who other humans can not accept? Will the Humans First and Last group cause an entire region of humans to be wiped out?

Solid alternate universe writing, good characters that grow, great story lines and little that leaves you shaking your head at implausibility (after all, humans are so silly and strange, aren’t they?) Bought the whole series and am working my way through them.
Meg Corbyn, blood prophet, has found a place among the Others. She's made friends, and is slowly discovering her independence. She has to learn what it means to be human, and teach the Others how to get along with humans--to see them as people, not prey.
But two addictive drugs have surfaced, and their use leads to violence, sparking battles between the Others and the humans living barely-tolerated on Other land. So when Meg dreams of the local Wolf leader, a dream that might have links to her prophetic skills, he listens. But the symbols in her dreams are hard to interpret, and trouble boils higher and tensions rise.
The humans want the Other's land--and the Others are considering wiping the humans out. Meg has to figure out what her increasing need to prophesy means, before it's too late. The people out to claim Meg are still out there, and she's still worth a lot of money--especially in these uncertain times.
The characters are still as fascinating at the first book, with sweet and determined Meg surrounded by monsters who are at times less monstrous than the humans. The Others have a non-human bewilderment at the human world while still somehow being easy to relate to. More of the complex culture of the Other races is revealed, though some mysteries remain. This is a plot that grabs you by the throat and hauls you along with it, a tension-filled race through dark monster-infested woods. On original story well worth the read for all urban fantasy fans.

First off, the title is just so delightful.
I've let my thoughts on the book get too old for a proper review. I enjoyed it. It's hard to put my finger on exactly what's so endearing about the series. I think a big part of it is the variety of perspectives. It's easy to relate to so many of the characters.
This book is essentially a continuation of [b:Written in Red|15711341|Written in Red (The Others, #1)|Anne Bishop|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1411439502l/15711341._SY75_.jpg|21378102], so it didn’t feel as if the plot had much substance. It was gratifying in how it added to the first book, but it wouldn’t hold up on its own. However, it seems that seeds have been planted for new storylines in subsequent books. Book 3 will be an indicator of whether the author picks up a new thread or whether the current plot will diffuse into chaos.

Very well written. Love the characters. I know this will be better the next time around. :)
Reread 6/20/20 - Not sure this one stands up to a reread. I still love the characters but it didn't have me antsy to see what happened. Seeing how the world was built a little at a time though is still really well done.
Reread 9/14/21 - reading with a friend this time around and still love this book. I actually liked it maybe a little more this time. Looking forward to the next one!
