My first O’Connor story. I inhaled it in less than a week — a fever dream of rage and desperation. The characters are deeply flawed but so clearly driven by their need for something (god, love, care, respect, appreciation, though the characters wouldn’t articulate it as such) outside of themselves.

“Wise Blood” is at the very least deeply funny at times and an incredibly interesting read that deals heavily with religion. I think one day I’ll read it again to get more out of it. I enjoyed my first read through.
Brings to mind the quote "there's no fanatic like a convert". But in this case, Hazel Motes is attempting to convert people away from Jesus and into the Church without Christ. His misadventures along the way provide for the type of humor that only comes along every so often: a deep and darkly funny critique on what we hold sacred and what we cannot let go of. One of my favorite books from late high school that I decided to reread. Very different on the latter try, but still one of my favorites.

I don't know that I got everything but what I did get I loved. The setting, the darkness, and the characters were superb. I think upon a reread in the future I will really get it.
