This was so much more than I had originally expected, and I expected to really enjoy it but I loved it *so* much more than that!

First off, let me talk about how this middlegrade book is woven so beautifully, complex yet easy to understand and raw. There are so many emotions that Amari goes through, and she does it in such a way that other readers will have an easy time looking up to the young heroine. She's complex, passionate, smart, resourceful and tenacious (among others) - she's much more than just a young girl. I loved her growth, I loved watcher her learn and make friends and confront bullies. It was also heartbreaker to watch the labels and norms the world, both worlds, imposed on her - but definitely important to be talked about!

The setting is middle fantasy - set in the real world but also with a secretive magical community hiding amongst us regular folks. It was believable and immersive, and I found myself wishing to know and be part of a magical community such as this one - if only I could train for a magical job!
The plot was fast paced, with so much being revealed and very action packed; I never felt that we were lagging or going too fast, everything was very well explained. The writing style was accessible even though the story was complex.

Overall, I loved it and I will be picking up the rest of the books that come out in this series. Highly recommended to both adult and middle grade readers!

What would you do if you found out you were magical, but then learned that your powers are illegal? That's what Amari must discover and decide in this supernatural adventure, which starts as a quest to find her missing brother. Fantastical yet realistically woven together, with a huge helping of bravery, compassion, and heart. Fans of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson need to meet Amari. I highly recommend this book! (Ages 8-12+)

This is so good! If I was a kid of this generation, this would be at the top of my list of favorite books. It's Men in Black, Harry Potter, Spy Kids, and Percy Jackson all rolled into one.

Amari and the Night Brothers is a fun, mystery, adventure-fantasy tale that follows a young Black girl, Amari Peters, who enlists in a hidden society known as the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs after discovering a ticking briefcase in her missing older brother's closet. Traveling from Rosewood low-income housing projects to an ordinary place on the outside where mermaids, aliens, dwarves, witches, magicians, dragons, and other creatures actually do exist on the inside, Amari must compete for a spot against other children who've always known of this organization while on a secret mission of her own: to find out what happened to her missing brother.

Penned by B.B. Alston, this magical debut middle-grade novel, which is the first book in this trilogy series, touches on topics like bullying, classism, and racist microaggressions. The whole time I was reading (or should I say flying through this book), I kept thinking, "This should be made into a movie." Well turns out 17-year-old Marsai Martin's got that covered

I started reading this together with my 11 year old daughter. We were enjoying it and then got COVID so I picked it up today and finished it while she got her hair done. It’s a very quick read with lots of twists and turns. I thought it would end with a cliffhanger there were so few pages left to resolve everything. You will see! Some parts were predicable but a lot kept me guessing. I enjoyed The relationships — siblings, friends, mother-daughter. Little to no romance. Placed a hold on the next one in the series the moment I finished!

This is a fantastic Harry Potter alternative for the Artemis Fowl readers!

Amari's trying her hardest to make it in the world where her brother disappeared and the snobs at school give her a hard time for being a black girl and a scholarship student. When she gets home, she gets a briefcase from her brother that gives her a free summer at "camp": the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs. Not only can she explore this brand new word, she can help find her brother!

This is a really complete magic world inside our own world where Amari brings her own agenda and personality to solve a mystery and prove her ability.

What a fun story and the easiest MC to root for. This was such a refreshing read because I've been wanting more magic realism and adventure-y plots without silly romance drama or smut. The world-building was smart, I didn't see all the twists coming, and technical aspects were well-done. Some characters felt a bit trope-ish, but I'm not minding too much.

Pick up if you enjoyed Harry Potter (Rowling), The Lightning Thief (Riordan), and/or Legendborn (Deonn).
