So good!!! Kenneth Oppel's writing style is so eloquent and captivating, I would pick it up intending to only read a chapter or two and would accidentally read 100 pages! And I loved Victor. I was very entertained by his character development throughout the story. His pride and jealousy manifest more and more as he spirals into a dark obsession with alchemy and is tormented by Elizabeth choosing Konrad over himself. He has all the makings of a mad scientist. Brilliant!
What a neat, neat book! The second half really captured my attention, and I had difficulty leaving my car! I found myself listening to it while I played with my son on the floor. I only do this with audio books that I really enjoy! I loved the way this book mixed adventure with the gothic setting. I felt like I was wrapped up in Oppel's words.
OMG.
I never thought that a guy author could write up really good guys and romantic scenes. Well, her you go.
And it was just plain awesome.

An action-packed, atmospheric imagining of Victor Frankenstein's life, pre-monster.
I have not read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, but it is sitting on my book shelf with 5000 (slight exaggeration) other books waiting to be read.
I found this book interesting, it kept my interest right to the very end. I loved the Alchemy aspects of it and how you can see Victor getting more and more entwined in the darkness of it all.
Being the first book in the series there is some back story, and information fill ins that will certainly help with any future "The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein" novels.
I look forward to reading other books by this author.

I loved the Victoria/Gothic feel of this book, it was in the characters, the setting, and the wording. I also liked how the characters also had some very modern ideals and ways of life, while still staying true to the time period. It also had a great ending that I think will lead nicely into the next book.
I have a confession to make: I've never actually read Frankenstein. But I am a huge fan of Kenneth Oppel which I really the only reason I read (listened to) this book. It's one of those situations where, had it not been for my admiration of the author, I would've completely passed this book by.
Having said that, I feel like Kenneth Oppel did not let me down. He wrote what would have been an otherwise agonizing story for me to get through and made it enjoyable. More than enjoyable actually. Oppel has this magic ability to write in such a way that makes you feel like you're watching a movie. His books are really made for cinema in my opinion and I really don't know how none of his books haven't been made into movies by now. I think This Dark Endeavor has the most likely chance to become a movie simply due to the popularity of anything to do with Frankenstein.

"Don't be so easily turned from our quest. Its way was never smooth, I grant you, but it was all the more glorious for being full of dangers and terror. At every turn our strength was tested, our courage called forth. And it was all done not for ourselves but for another. That is what makes it glorious."
what an adventure of a book. I've read Frankenstein and wasn't a huge fan although I enjoyed it.
But I do like the idea of finding out who Victor was. The idea that he had a childhood that might have shaped into someone who...well, who makes monsters.
Elizabeth and Henry were just a nice addition to the book. Great sidekicks and central players, they added a depth to both Konrad and Victor that would have been lost without their friends.
I also thought the atmosphere in the book was still eerie and fun, creepy enough to remind you what Victor late becomes and how this world helped nurture this side of him.
this was a perfect October book!
