I wanted to love it, but didn’t connect with any of the characters.
I quit half way through at the anal rape scene and skimmed after that. Yuck, didn’t need that in graphic detail.

If I had read this book in 2019, 2020 would have scared the shit out of me. Reading it in 2023, I wonder how Chuck got hat the far right are so right.

And the payoff at the end? Chef's kiss.

Absolutely worth it in every way.

I just finished and...ugh...wow. I had to go back and flip through the first 100 or so pages just to see and appreciate what I couldn’t see before. The characters alone are worth the long trek with them. Wendig’s book is often an all too realistic mirror for our own. That alone was unsettling. Throw in an obviously well-researched apocalyptic scenario that, once it begins, gave me the same pit in my stomach feeling as when I read World War Z. There were times when I made myself go run an errand just to be out in the world and reassure myself it’s still here and running.

I kept reading because I had to know how everything ended up. Otherwise, I can never get these hours of my life back. This feels like an author who had about 10 books in him, and he decided for whatever reason to combine them all.
