Oh my, but SOMEDAY ANGELINE is so adorable. My EL510 student who is hardest to please with the book selections for that class actually finished the whole book before our second class and declared that this book was fun, as compared to all the other books we had read before it (Mary Poppins, Kenny and the Dragon...). I liked the themes we could discuss in this book as well, about youth vs. genius, good/bad parenting, etc. The omniscient third-person narration was strange sometimes, and I didn't like how the adult romance was treated, but all in all, a solid thumbs-up for using this book for EL510.

Louis Sachar never misses! I love all of his characters. Can't wait to read the sequel!

This is the only book (as a tween) that I remember absolutely adoring and actually remembered. It’s so cute. A father and daughter relationship told through a short story. I still think of it to this day

I enjoy Freddie DeBoer so much that when he makes a shortlist of junior fiction to read for his bookclub, I'll read them all (to be fair, he did include The Giver so he's got curation cred) Anyhow this is from 1983, a time when you could scare children a little, imply the main character has drowned, and keep young readers in a state of suspension while they tear ahead in the pages to find out what happened. Never too young to get them with a hook.
