Read the the first 4 chapters and then read the last 4 chapters. You'll get a good idea of the story. No need to read the in-between. It's hard to feel sorry for Nathan and Sadie. They live a privileged life. Sadie is pretty self absorbed so her not having sex with her husband for two months did not make me feel bad for her. Nathan is just there. Finn was the most interesting character. I don't have an issue about cheating in romance if done right. I'm all for forgiveness and fighting for your marriage but Nathan pretty much just rolled over and accepted whatever reasoning Sadie gave him. Maybe if the story was told from multiple POVs I would have enjoyed it more. Sadie is not likable.
I think my hopes were way to high for this read because I was very disappointed.
By far the authors writing style was my favorite aspect about this book. It’s what kept me interested enough to finish the read.
Although I felt Sadie played victim for a lot of the book, she was easy to read and to even connect with. Finn was the most annoying character. He reeked of mid-life crisis. He went from 0-100 with Sadie in an incredibly fast time frame.
The story line of them knowing each other before Sadie met Nathan felt like it was thrown in there to give the characters more of a connection. Idk. I didn’t make sense to me.
How quick Nathan forgave Sadie, the bit about her having an abortion years prior. Non of it felt connected for a greater cause.
I had different expectations about the story I would get and sadly this just didn’t do it for me.

Why just whyyyy?!
Ok this book took me on a roller coaster of emotion! I loved both heroes and went back & forth for who I was rooting for. The storyline is raw and real and so relatable and brings to light issues that are constant in the lives of everyday people. I enjoyed the book but the ending seemed rushed and I would've liked an epilogue rather than such an abrupt ending.

Where do I start?
Positives: I liked the author's writing style. The storyline was easy to follow and provided some situations related to fate, and life intersections, chance encounters, and outcomes.
What I didn't like: first, the topic. I should have known it was a story about infidelity based on the two sentences on the cover. I can deal with cheating in novels when the story is told well. The end of this one just didn't work for me.
Sadie was selfish, and while her husband, Nathan, was "shutting her out" she elected not to be an adult and TALK to him about it. Instead, she starts to get involved with the new (also married) neighbor Finn. She admitted cheating to her husband and there's an immediate blow up, then days later he's over it and they start to move forward. Um, no. That's not realistic.
He appeared secretive and moody, but in the end was a wimp! He needs to grow a pair and get what he wants from his wife, rather than letting her take, take, take.
She came from a messy family and seems to use that as an excuse for her behavior. She seems to crave attention without giving anything back, to her husband or Finn, the neighbor.
Speaking of Finn, he sees her and knows who she is: according to him, the one that got away. Even though they had less than a 5 minute conversation in a coffee shop eons ago when they were in college, he's completely head over heels for her and never got over that coffee shop interaction. Um, what? Pining away for someone you don't even really know, and only had one encounter with? That seemed extreme. Extreme to the point that I thought he was going to be a stalker, and not her adultery partner.
Idk. I read it quickly and wanted to know what was happening next, but Sadie just annoyed me to the point where I lost interest. I would like to see what the hell is with Finn!

I'm blown away by all the ANGST! My stomach was in knots for the majority of the story. Yes, Sadie was annoying and EXTREMELY annoying IMO. But, overall I enjoyed this look into marriage. It was pretty realistic, but I found parts not authentic. Finn?? I felt that was just convenient for the angst of the story. It added more doubt to Sadies already confused mind. But really, she should have guessed what was really behind Nathan's actions. Anyway, read it one day because I couldn't put it down. That's at least 4 stars in my book
I'm not really sure why it's taken me so long to review Slip of the tongue by Jessica Hawkins, maybe my brain did not feel like it could do the book justice by reviewing earlier...And maybe it's taken me six months to put together what I read.
This was a departure of a book for me, I don't normally like books with any type of cheating in it. And I did not go into it really knowing how much of the story was going to involve an affair. If affairs and cheating is a trigger for you, then this book is a definite no for you. however if you're willing to have an open mind and let the brilliant Jessica Hawkins guide you through a story like you've not seen before, curl up with this book and be prepared to not put it down until the end.
Maybe I identify with the female character a little too much here, I might be a little self involved, a little bit bratty maybe I identify with the female character a little too much here, I might be a little self involved, a little bit bratty… , But people still love me anyway right? that's not a very good description of Sadie, but those are the first feelings that I get about her in the book, it definitely evolves throughout the story and she's probably one of the most evolved characters that you'll read. I can't really be a good judge of character on Nathan, her well meaning husband, Because for me this book is about two men: Finn and Finn.
Finn is the ultimate character you want to cheer on, even though you know it's probably not the "right" choice. it's probably a reason number one that I am not married, because I would choose him in a heartbeat, married, what? Who me?! . And eventhough I understand the choices that are made in the book, I cannot say that they would've been mine.
Because I feel so strongly about Finn, I really could've been happy if the book had left off about midway through. However Jessica Hawkins as again the brilliant one and has turn this into a three book series....standalones yes. But the same yummy men and brilliant sensory provoking writing!!
This is my go to recommendation for best book of 2016. Hands down!

I was skeptical at first but after a few chapters was hooked. I could feel Sadie questioning everything, and wandering what went wrong, going from how much she and Nathan loved each other in the beginning of their relationship to him acting like he despised her. Losing communication in their relationship made her believe he didn’t love her anymore which in turn lead her to turn to the one person showing interest. I think everything the characters went through had to happen in order to appreciate everything more. It made things clear and helped them see what they were missing. I appreciated how the ending didn’t end up how I initially thought.
It started off really good, but I didn't care for how it ended. I'm also really disappointed that it didn't have an epilogue.
Slip of the Tongue - (Webster's Dictionary ) - something that is said by mistake
The synopsis was included in the sign up for this book. So, when the ARC hit my Kindle, I decided no to re-read the synopsis, and go into this relatively blind. I have never read anything by Jessica Hawkins before, so I had no idea what to expect.
From the outside Sadie Hunt is married to the man of her dreams and their marriage is perfect. She has her career, her husband adores her, and she pretty much can do as she pleases. Life as she knows it is pretty much as good as it can get. Until it isn't.
Nathan Hunt is the every man. He is handsome, smart, loving, caring. His life is full of his work, volunteerism, and making sure that Sadie has everything she needs to live a full life. He gives and gives to her, asking for nothing in return. The only thing he really wants for her, that she can't seem to give him, is a baby.
The foundation of the story, is the bond between a husband and wife and of how quickly it can be broken, when the line of communication ceases to exist. In the beginning of the book, Sadie is struggling a drastic change in her husband's demeanor and his unwillingness to be intimate with her. After two months of living like strangers, and the constant push back from Nathan that he's not ready to talk about it yet. She is left feeling lonely and shut out in her marriage. At this point in the book, let's just say Nathan was not my favorite person.
When she needs it the most, a distraction enters her life. Finn Cohen, moves in across the hall, and she quickly get tangled up in the magic of him, and his attention. He and Nathan has many similar attributes, but Finn is far more attentive than Nathan has been in months. The combination of Nathan's mixed messages, wild thoughts that Nathan is having an affair, and the uncanny familiarity with Finn, makes for some interesting moments between those two. I had some trouble with Finn. throughout his dialogue, he is one INTENSE guy. I don't know if I would have been as taken in by him as Sadie was. Sometimes it felt like it bordered on stalker obsession. All the talk of future would've scared the hell out of me, but with Sadie, any attention is better than no attention. (I just painted her has soulless and selfish, but Said has a ton of baggage from her childhood.) There is more to Finn, than just being the new neighbor, but I will leave that for the reader to discover.
The pressure cooker of the unknown builds and she has finally had enough. Shit hits the fan, big time. The quiet reserved Nathan loses his temper and finally drops the bombshell he's been sitting on. We hear his side of what their marriage has been like and what it means to him. This give us a bird's eye view of how Nathan sees her, and how he wants more from her than what she's been giving him these last seven years. Sadie's been keeping a pretty big piece of information from him and it's not just the affair. It's hard to imagine where this could've gone and where it ends up. I honestly wasn't sure who she was going to choose, or even she would end up with either of them.
I loved this book. In my opinion books like this are few and far between. I haven't been affected by book like this since I read Married Sex by Jesse Kornbluth. It's thought provoking, well written, and it will be high on my list of favorite books.
PS....Ginger was everything.
I give this book 4.5 our 5 stars
I was given an ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review.

I am obsessed with this book. I loved every single minute it and I love books where I have no idea what is going to happen and who she would choose. But I am happy with the outcome. I really enjoy the love triangle even though it is heartbreaking sometimes. If you haven’t read this book I highly suggest it!
