The plot was exciting (much more exciting than a lot of books that center around toppling empires), the world was vast, and the characters Jovis and Lin were compelling. But the magic system really made no sense and was silly at times (battles where the MCs are furiously scribbling on tiny pieces of human bone to put back inside of furry creatures? idk). Also, wlw weren't in the foreground; they are more like a side plot (B-/C plot level treatment).

I'm not committed yet on whether or not the sequel's in my future but the read was enjoyable and held my attention!

This is a soft dnf. I am pretty sure I will like this but I don’t think I’m in the right mindset for this big of a fantasy.

Solid 3 star. I really liked the premise, but felt as though the story actually suffered from too many point of view characters. I feel like the changing view short-shifted some of the more important/more interesting stories (Lin). But will most likely read the second in the series

2nd read:

I enjoyed this more the second time around, I think knowing what the big reveal is raised my enjoyment.

A great debut fantasy novel with what, at least in book 1, seem to be at least 2 distinct and interesting systems of magic.

"The Bone Shard Daughter" sets the stage for a trilogy filled with an intriguing magic system, well-handled multiple POVs that feel as distinct as the characters themselves, and adorable companions in the faces of Mephi and Thrana that simply steal the show.

We need more characters like Mephi.

I quite liked this book, despite the fact that up until its 20% I considered abandoning it.
The things with which I have problems are the fact that the narration changes between 1st and 3rd person, depending on the story arc, and that the world/setting is not explained, leaving you confused for the aforementioned initial 20% of the book. The story is interesting and the characters evolve throughout the narration (though this is definitely more on the Young Adult side, when it comes to depth and development of the characters), so I don't think that giving an overview of this fantasy world at the beginning would have hurt.
If I have to judge only on my feelings at the end of the book, I would give this 4 stars; but the frustration I felt at the beginning makes me stick to 3 only.
