A lovely retelling of a Tolstoy short story for children--yes, it works better than it sounds! The book is a simple fable with a lovely message; Tolstoy's Tsar who finds the answers to philosophical questions by saving his enemy is turned into a boy looking for answers from his animal friends. The beautiful watercolor illustrations give the book a wonderfully thoughtful, calm feeling.
The Three Questions is based on a short story by Leo Tolstoy, adapted for children. A boy named Nikolai "sometimes felt uncertain about the right way to act. 'I want to be a good person,' he told his friends. 'But I don't always know the best way to do that.'" He asks his animal friends:
"When is the best time to do things?
"Who is the most important one?
"What is the right thing to do?"
His friends give him the best answers they can from their experiences, but Nikolai finds them incomplete, so he sets off on a journey to ask the wise old turtle Leo. He has the chance to help both Leo and an injured panda bear in a storm and discovers the answers to his questions.
"There is only one important time, and that time is now. The most important one is always the one you are with. And the most important thing is to do good for the one who is standing at your side. For these, my dear boy, are the answers to what is most important in this world. This is why we are here."
Simple, profound truths illustrated gorgeously with cool watercolors, this book is a treasure.

A very philosophical picture book about being present. I think this book may go over some younger students heads, but might be an interesting read for high schoolers to read and discuss.
Jon. J. Muth is one of my favorite children's book authors, making very complicated ideas accessible to a younger audience.

This was a very interesting read, very short and could easily be read in less than 10 minutes I believe. I liked the moral of the story and how the characters are displayed.
One of the great things that I look for in a short story is simplicity. I am not looking for sub-plots or characters that are described in full detail, what I am looking for is a coherent, well-written story that goes around one main idea and this short story succeeded in doing so.
