Interesting to get a prequel to the first book, covering Padmé’s ascension into Queen Amidala and the beginning of finding and bonding with her handmaidens! I love them all and their unique talents. Not to mention there’s some sapphic romance here which definitely made me perk up! I love when Star Wars authors go beyond heteronormativity. And it felt very natural here, which I loved.

"You can't put that many teenage girls together and not expect them to scheme. Or kill each other. Frankly, you're lucky they appear to be doing the former."

It was interesting to see the girls squabble a bit more as they tried to find their footing as a team in this book. This definitely skews more young adult since our main characters are in their early teens. So while I loved it and don’t mind reading within a YA genre, some adult enjoyers of Star Wars may find their teenageness a bit grating. I thought it helped showcase the weight of being a young queen and how, yes, these girls are still children, but they are undoubtedly loyal to Padmé and it’s a wonderful thing to see.

I did not expect the way the ending wrenched my heart, oof. Anything involving Qui-Gon really hurts me now!! Owie!! I care about this fictional galaxy too much. But I always enjoy reading more and more about it - I will happily take another!

Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for the review copy!

I adored this so much. As someone who was 9 when Episode I came out, and who loved Padme Amidala from the start... It was fantastic to see all these characters fleshed out and come together! I love the story of bringing the handmaidens together and seeing how they adjusted to working together. I also LOVED seeing Padme be a bit of an errant teenager, even while she was Queen of the planet! I certainly hope we get more stories that delve more into Padme's character, as well as that of her handmaidens. (Also, it seems like a great time for a re-read of Queen's Shadow!)

I enjoyed the narrator and felt the pacing was ok, but I can see where it might not be to everyone's tastes. It's a lot about what the girls are going to wear and how they're all so super smart and talented. It's a coming-of-age story (they're so young!) with the Star Wars framework and if you've seen the movies you know how this book ends.

I appreciated the story and what it adds to the already known Star Wars canon. However, this writing was just a little too simple for my liking and left a lot to be desired. 3.5⭐️

If you're a huge Padmé fan then you'll love this book since it provides a lot of background and insight into everything going on before and during TPM.

Overall I enjoyed Queen's Shadow much more as a stand alone novel as this book felt a little bit more like an extended story from the "A Certain Point of View" books.

I was hesitant about this one because I did not really enjoy Queen's Shadow. I was so wrong. The pacing and characterization in this one were both excellent. I really enjoyed how it dovetailed with familiar events, something I didn't expect. I thought each of the handmaiden characters were unique and fleshed out well. Anyone who enjoys her other books will love this one, and even if you didn't, give this one a chance. Fun read!
