Queen's Peril

E.K. Johnston

3.95 AVERAGE

5 stars ⭐️

E.K. Johnston does not disappoint with his one.

"Queen's Peril" serves as a prequel to "Queen's Shadow" and therefore follows a lot of events we've already seen in Episode 1, but that does not take away from the quality of the book. Having this closer look at known events only makes Padme, Sabé and co. even more interesting for me. I especially enjoyed all the chapters dedicated to each girl's backstory and the new POVs introduced in this book, including young Obi-Wan Kenobi.

This prequel is a great addition to Padme's story and the Skywalker Saga in general.

Star Wars: The Padme Trilogy #2

Padme has been elected Queen of Naboo and with the help of her security head, creates a team of handmaidens to help protect her. When the Trade Federation starts to poke at Naboo, Padme joins in on the political games in order to keep her planet safe.

This was very much a YA read, heavily focused on the teenaged girl audience. I made the mistake of reading these out of order, but I enjoyed this one even though I was not the target demographic. I like Star Wars but I'm not a purist so I felt that this was a great story for Padme. I liked reading about her and her life before Anakin. She was going places and I'm sort of sad that one boy comes along and ruins it for her.

I don't have a ton to say about this one. I think that if you don't mind reading books that include teenaged girls, make up, dresses, and periods, then this will probably be a fun read for you. If you don't like those things, then skip it. But I will say that there's a bit of torture and loads of political intrigue in this book, too, which made it quite interesting.

I gave this one a 3 out of 5. It get's a 3 because the non-teenaged girl stuff was really good! Also, it's rated down partially because I'm sort of tired of all the Star Wars audiobooks having the low-rumble sound effect in the background of the narration. It's annoying, it's unnecessarily loud (I'm sure it's damaging my ears), and we don't need that noise.

AAAAAAH!!! SPACE POLITICS

Listened to about 40% on Audiobook and finished the last 60% reading it.

Became more interested in Padmé as a character during watching Clone Wars series and wanted to know more, so it was cool and noticed right away that her voice actor for the show (Catherine Taber) also narrated the audiobook. Very cool and interesting story learning the lore of how Padmé becomes "Queen Amidala" in the literal sense of becoming queen but also developing her presence and the logistics of the royal handmaidens. The first half of so is better than the latter, and rather would have gotten more backstory on Padmé and the handmaidens than the last quarter of the book which is set during events of the POTM movie (good thing is that it doesn't retell the movie, just what's happening in background). High part of the story though was the part where it reminds you that while this is a story about an elected queen and her handmaidens/bodyguards, it's also a story about teenagers as well.

Audiobook having Star Wars sound effects was cool.

I have almost three shelves lined with Star Wars books! A lot I’ve read, and many I haven’t. So for my 2021 reading list, I added a bunch of them that I’ve wanted to get though. I just finished #QueensPeril by E.K. Johnston last week.
I LOVED E.K.‘s first Amidala novel, #QueensShadow and was super excited to read this one which stands as a prequel to that one.
While this book is very well written, I’m sad to say I was disappointed and ended up giving it three stars on @goodreads.
To be completely honest, the two sentences about Anakin flying during the Battle of Naboo took off a whole star. That may seem petty, but that, along with some other random moments just seemed way out of place.
I appreciated and really enjoyed the story of Padme’s election and the early days of her Naboo rule, but about halfway through, we ended up getting into territory that’s already been seen in The Phantom Menace film. While yes, we got a look at some other things that were happening that weren’t in the film, I just don’t understand why we had to have a story during a period we’ve already seen a lot of content for.
Padme has an entire length of time as Queen Amidala that has NEVER been explored. I would much rather see more of that period in between The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones than what we were given in this novel. I really hope we see that in the next volume of this series.
