This has got to be one of the most captivating books i've ever read. You're pulled in right from the start. The description is impeccable. As it should be, It's set in our world yet in the future where the oxygen levels aren't so great. And you really feel Reagan's emotions. It's a book i could read again and again. And i probably will.

E...hm. Mělo to ohromný potenciál, to nezapřu.
A o překladu radši nemluvím...

I was so gosh darn excited for this book. A new technology that could allow people to escape their lives and enter a new reality? Umm, can I have one too? And obviously, there would be something darker and sinister attached to said device. Science-fiction is really awesome sometimes, so I had my fingers crossed that this would be a success.

But it wasn't. Not really. There was some interesting corporate conspiracy stuff. But the rest was just...mediocre. The technology was pretty confusing. The author did her best to explain, and I wrapped my head around most of it, but the "firewall" made zero sense. I had no idea what they meant by going "behind the wall." How the heck do you go behind a firewall??

The protagonist was utterly forgettable. I can't remember her name. (Honestly, wow what was it?) She was desperate, ignorant, confused, hasty, and not even likable. The romance? It was like a lame love triangle thing, but not really. The main love interest (forgot his name too) was just empty. He was supposed to have this dark past and military background but there sure wasn't much else to him. The only person I remember was Patrick. I liked and hated him, which is probably why I remember him. He was more three-dimensional than the rest, thank heavens.

The mystery aspects were good, I didn't know everything that was happening until the end...but then the end wasn't all that great either. I was disappointed by the confusing, messy plot twist that left us with a cliffhanger. Nothing felt explained. I didn't have any amazing revelation brought on by the end, and I sure don't feel desperate to read the next book (which is usually the point of a cliff hanger). Overall, yes, there were some good ideas in this book, (I liked the Detroit setting too), but none were executed to my satisfaction. It fell flat, and I wish it could have reached its full potential.

So in the beginning I really like it. But the quality drastically dropped off at the last part of the book.

First off all Patrick and Reegan go back to when they were little kids. Literally knew each other their entire lives. But when this "mysterious, cliche, guy" (Josh) shows up she just eats everything out of Josh's hands.

For example the entire time Reegan tells Patrick wants to hear "the truth" when he tells her it she just says he's lying because what Josh said even though he doesn't know shit. She's pretty much saying tell me what the truth is and I'll tell you why you're wrong.

Secondly every time they went into Elusion there would be some kind of mess that would supposedly kill Reegan. But in the beginning of the book it clearly states that you can not be killed in Elusion. Then with about 50 pages left it magically says
Spoilermaybe you can die in Elusion :O
Spoiler. During all the other ones I was not the least bit scared about Reegan.

Also the HUGE cliche that
Spoiler"someone dies very unexpected who is influential, and goes without a trace. But he is alive WOAH DUDE

So, I was initially really excited to read this book. And then I looked at some of the reviews, and I was like, "All my friends who have read this hate it." And then I started the book, and it was like reading the script for the opening scenes of "Caprica" except the dad is dead, not the daughter. So then I'm thinking, "I'm going to punch myself for spending $13 on this book."

But as I read more of it I started to like it. I really like the characters (except for the fact that Patrick cycles between 4 years old, 18, and 65). I liked Josh, and the struggles with his sister and the main character seem realistic.

My main complaint is that the book doesn't seem well thought out, there are places where the authors simply state, "And then this happens!" without any building, but other places they build and build and NOTHING happens. So it's mildly disappointing in that regard.

I also noticed typos, which were annoying.

All in all, three stars. Wait until it comes out in paperback, don't rush to read this. Like I did. And I regret it.

I was quite excited about this book. When I read the synopsis, it seemed incredibly interesting. Virtual Reality Games are one of my interests and I had the wish to read a story around that theme for a long time. But this book didn't reach my expectations and it took far too much of my time. I'm not exactly a fast reader, but it took almost a whole month to read, because I couldn't feel motivated by it. Actually, I started to read this book on my Summer holidays, around August, and I kept leaving it behind because I wasn't 'feeling it'. I couldn't feel any kind of empathy towards any of the characters; they all seemed shallow, poor developed and didn't have much to offer to the story. And everything seemed as though it was happening out of nowhere... It was happening too fast. Reagan and Josh's relationship happened in a single week. How could she stop trusting her lifetime best friend and start trusting blindly on a guy that she met in a party a week ago?

Liked the feel and plot of this, kind of a Tron plot set in a Blade Runner type setting. Felt the ending was a bit rushed and what the hell was that with the Dune sand worms?
