Ugh. I am so not a Dean Koontz fan. He's great with words, but his structure is seriously lacking.

This is a frantic tale of supernatural power and corrupt human nature that takes place over the course of a day or two. The reveal is nuts and the dog is a good boy. I read this in half a day on the beach!
The only character that I really liked was the dog. They were all so pessimistic. The plot was good, though.
I hadn't read Dean Koontz in about 40 years, so thought I would give him a try again. This just isn't a very good book. It's pretty cheesy, with extended viewpoint of a dog, and the whole thing is pervaded by a constant right-wingish whining about how society was falling apart in the 1990s. No responsibility, no hard work, old man shaking fist at clouds sort of stuff.
Further, the origin story of the villain simply makes no sense at all.
His mother took lots of psychedelics so he somehow became a superbeing? Huh?
And the end of schmaltzy, with the dog happy that everyone is all together and happy.

Okay, I'm really not sure how I feel about this book. The first half took a lot of effort to carry on with and actually get into the story and it's somewhat strange twists and turns. But the second half, once things began to make a bit of sense and the different threads of the story started coming together, was really rather good. It follows two detectives one what starts as a normal shift and quickly descends into chaos as a crazed and heavily armed man attacks a restaurant after which their normal day is turned completely on its head and they find themselves faced with a foe above and beyond any they have faced before. I think this is a book worth persevering with as it does take a bit of time before things start clicking into place but once it does you just cannot put it down.
