The Diabolic

3.96 AVERAGE

This was a hard rating to give! I'll keep it at 4 stars, but if I could, I would probably give it 3.5.
The Diabolic is an exciting and fast paced read that kept me hooked until the end. Filled with shocking plot twists (holy crap page 161) and a seriously disturbed cast of characters, it is incredibly entertaining.
I loved Sidonia's POV. Seeing the world and events through her inhuman thoughts is very original and brings something new to this typical YA sci-fi story.
This book reminded way too much Red Queen. It even has some of the same problems: well thought out world building, and shallow characterization. Besides Sidonia, all of the characters fell a little flat for me. They were hard to connect to and I couldn't make myself care about any of them. Honestly, the most interesting character in this novel was Tyrus's evil genius grandmother.
While I enjoyed Tyrus as a character, I wish we would have seen more of him. His transition from "crazy prince" to "revolutionary usurper" was too fast. His character arc sometimes felt forced and there was nothing very striking about him.
What I liked most about the Tyrus/Sidonia romance, is that neither of them are particularly good people. In YA, we often see the good, moral, innocent character as one side of the relationship, and the impulsive, dangerous character on the other side. For for this couple, they are both deadly, devious, and willing to look past their moral reservations to do what needs to be done.
The ending of this novel was SO EXCITING. Unfortunately, I didn't know it was a stand alone until the last few pages, and that made the ending a lot less satisfying. The ending felt rushed and abrupt. The consequences of Tyrus and Sidonia's actions at the end of the book could have been expanded on. I would love to see this book turn into a duology.
Still, I really did enjoy this novel. It was engaging, exciting, and very very diabolic. ;)

Oh wow, plot twists after plot twists!
I love how the author doesn't spare characters! I was kind of disappointed when Sidonia turned out to be alive, but I began to like her in the end. She didn't deserve her death.
Ah!! Tyrus is so clever!!! I love how Cygna understood Nemesis's revenge for Sidonia!
But most of all, I wonder, what are the capabilities of diabolics in terms of feeling emotion???

In a Nutshell: A human-like girl, trained to be a deadly weapon, finds her own humanity, in this intriguing novel about love, hate, and vengeance.

More review to come!

I'm very conflicted with this book. I like it, I loathe it, I am confused.

All of the stars! So good! What a great book to start the year out with!!

This was a pretty great first book in a new series which I will continue with just as soon as I have space on my shelves for the other books in the series.

The main character is Nemesis, a Diabolic, a deadly weapon that's only job is to protect a child who's parents purchase it. Nemesis may be one of the few Diabolic's left after the government calls for a cull on them due to the danger they pose. But Nemesis is hidden and kept, and when the Emperor calls for Sidonia , the girl who Nemesis is supposed to protect to go to the Imperial Court. And Nenesis goes in her place.

There are a lot of secondary characters and I think they will be explored more in the other books in the series.

The storyline is great and as a first book in a new series I would say that it brilliantly introduced a new setting and characters that I can't wait to read more of. The pacing is very good and I very much enjoyed the cliffhanger ending that has made me very excited to read the next book in the series.

4 stars a great read

Holy moly I forgot how good this book was!!! Of course, since it has been two years since I've read it, I had forgotten most of its contents. However, for some reason, I did remember three diabolics dying at one point or another. But The Diabolic sure is out of this world. I love the drama, the deception, the action, and of course, the love. What also makes this book so wonderful is how Nemesis has extensive growth in herself which is very inspiring to those who are lost in their journey such as myself. I am very excited to read the second installment of this wonderful trilogy. However, I did learn that the third book isn't out yet and now I'm going to go crazy waiting for the ending.

Read this in one sitting! So good and different! Loved it so much and loved the vibe that was felt from this other worldly concept. I loved how long it took to see nemesis change and sculpt into what a "human" might feel. She went through a lot of barriers and was really smart with how she played the game. Lots of death but that was needed for the progression on the story. Amazing read and would definitely recommend to anyone who likes sci fi, fantasy with a touch of romance.

This was me after starting this book:

I needed this book. What a refreshing, wonderful read. I was in a slump before this but it got me right out of it.

This book is a YA sci fi novel, set in space, in the far future. It introduces us to Nemesis, a Diabolic created to protect one person and destroy anyone who could harm that person. In Nemesis's case, that person is Sidonia, a daughter of a Senator. The story really kicks off when Sidonia's dad pisses off the Emperor and Sidonia is summoned to the Emperor's galactic court, but they make Nemesis go in her place in disguise. Then a whole load of shit happens at court, Nemesis meets the Emperors nephew Tyrus, and the rest of the story would be a spoiler so that's as far as a synopsis I will give.

This story is incredible. I was enthralled throughout. I absolutely loved Nemesis, she's exactly the sort of badass female protagonist I love. I also really adored Tyrus. I like my love interests to be a little bit of a badboy,a little bit of a "not sure if they can be trusted" vibe going on (e.g Rhysand, Warner, Damon Salvatore etc.) I love it. The sci fi was interesting and complex enough to feel well done, but not over the top complicated that just confuses the reader. The actual plot flowed super well, and the pacing was great. I wasn't bored at all reading, and the ending? Just wow. It made me go and preorder book 2 straight away, and I can't wait to pick it up in less than 2 weeks! It ended in a way that it can be read and accepted as a standalone, as I believe it was originally meant to be, but for me, I need to know what happens next.
Anyone who enjoys YA Sci fi, pick up this book next. You won't be disappointed.
