A feel good story with an absurd amount of virtue signaling by the author. Colfer wants you to know just how much of an ally he is at every turn. The characters, though, are easy to root for and the story doesn't require much commitment. The plot keeps up at a steady clip. Yet the writing often feels a little stilted and forced. On the whole, I certainly didn't mind my time with it, and found it hard to put down despite its flaws.

Unfortunately, predictable. I did enjoy seeing lgbt main characters, that doesn’t happen very often, so I love that.

This book started off very slowly. At first, I thought it was in a similar world as Land of Stories which was very confusing. The intro didn't hook me but I kept reading because of how much I love Land of Stories. I can't say I love how the book turned out. There was way too much backstory in the beginning and it's much smoother if it is spaced out. I was given the conflict before the other characters which put me in the all-knowing view. Because I knew more about the characters and I was told the trip, not much was surprising. I love when books surprise me and this one didn't do it. There were some great lessons in this book but they all felt pushed onto the reader. They were a bit forced which made them less impactful. Overall, I recommend reading Land of Stories because it is an amazing series but I do not recommend this book.

I have been a big fan of Chris Colfer's writing for a while now. I own all of the books he has written and his first YA book Struck by Lightening is one of my favorite books. I was so excited when I first heard about this book. When I first started the book I was concerned that my wait had been in vain. The books started out kind of bland and I wasn't sure where exactly the book was meant to go. The farther along the book went the more I felt for each character. Colfer has one very strong skill as an author and that is writing very real characters. Colfer's character's never disappoint me. He always manages to write characters that are heart breakingly human and this book was no exception. While I did find the plot of the book to be rather predictable and the "twist ending" to be sort of bland I did love his characters and I was sad so say good bye to them when the book was over. This books plot really only earned a 3 stars but the characters and real dialog that came with them is what earned it the extra star. All in all I liked the book.

Fuck, plot twist much omg

It was a cute audiobook listen while I worked, nothing exciting but still a good time.
