A straight forward approach to taking care of books. A statement is on one page and an illustration on the other. It reads more like a non-fiction title than a picture book title. If sharing with littles, it would be important to talk through the incidents and better decisions. (There are also some terms that can be unknown for youngster, so those will need to talked through as well.)

Theme: Librarian
Additional themes: books, book care

Reviewed from a library copy.

While instructive about what to do (and not do) with a library book, I didn't find this text or illustrations particularly engaging. It's more of an illustrated list of rhyming rules. Suggests "at least" erasing if you end up "leaving a trace." Seems geared toward PS-K though at one point states "don't censor, delete, or deface," which is challenging vocabulary for that age. What look like colored-pencil illustrations of various animals doing the "bad" things are not engaging and feel a little odd.

I'd love to see this concept done better.

Simple sentences and vibrant pictures give the reader practical advice on how to treat a book. Spoiler alert, you shouldn’t eat it!

Advice on how to treat a borrowed book. Really though, the advice seemed to conflict with what I learned in my ECRR training... but what can you do?

A cute picture book about library (and general) book manners. I especially thought it was great how the page, in the copy I read through, about not ripping pages (because they don't magically heal) was ripped. I thought it really added something to the experience.

This book is adorable and funny. The illustration of the raccoon was a bit lacking but otherwise, no complaints.

A hilarious book that encourages children about the proper care of library books. The children will giggle, but librarians and biblophiles will laugh uproariously! Excellent for reading to preschool and kindergarten children getting their first introduction to the library.

I thought that Schoenherr did a delightful, clever, and cute job of introducing book care to the preschool crowd. This would be a wonderful addition to any library story-time. I especially like the large colorful animal and book drawings against the white space.

Okay, I must admit a bias here – obviously I’m going to like any book that explains how to take care of library books in a kid-friendly way. This one covers most of the possibilities: no marking on, standing on, sneezing on or chewing on books; don’t leaving them out in the rain or get food on them. What does Schoenherr recommend we DO with our books? Share them! The rhyming text introduces some new vocabulary like dog-ear, censor and deface, but they’re easily defined through the cute illustrations. Kids already in the know will have fun admonishing the animal characters with “we don’t do that!” This is a wonderful introduction to book care that will be shared by librarians, teachers and parents alike.
