I really appreaciate how David Jackson has managed to up the stakes with each book in this series, and I really hope he continues with this series in the future. The only thing stopping me from giving a higher rating is that I'm not sure how I feel about the way the female characters are portrayed (nagging, overly protective of DS Cody, a bit obsessed with him, etc.), and I really hope that these depictions will be improved upon in any potential future books

Your Deepest Fear is the fourth psychological thriller in the DS Nathan Cody series, and what a cracking read it is. It's a long time since I've read a thriller so addictive and intensely gripping the I ended up taking the phone off the hook and ignoring my life for the nail-biting couple of hours I spent enjoying it. It has a dark, disturbing plot with a truly brutal murder and a wonderful mystery about it which stems from the curious message left on the answering machine.

Although part of a (fantastic) series each of these instalments can be read as a standalone as you learn enough information about the recurring characters to understand them nicely. The cast and the story are deepened with every turn of the page and given the number of shocking, exhilarating and truly gobsmacking reveals throughout this is a must-read for crime, mystery, thriller and psychological suspense fans. I cannot wait for the next instalment. More, please! Many thanks to Zaffre for an ARC.

Excellently read audio book by Jonathan Keeble, however, how long is the over-used James Moriarty - criminal mastermind trope going to be around? Everything Cody does has been foreseen by Waldo, Jackson's criminal mastermind-cleverly done, but it's so contrived. No inkling is given as to why Detective Cody has been singled out for this treatment- it's a big hole in the plot that the leaves me, the reader, wondering why am I reading this at all- to buy the next instalment when all will be revealed? Jackson, however, neatly brings two main plots together and has created a wonderful new female character, along the lines of Lisbeth Salandar of dragon tattoo fame. Jackson's prior novels, at least had crimes that were solved. Note: Danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen has already covered the concept/theme of "Your Deepest Fear", in his Department Q series.

I didn’t realise before reading this that it wasn’t the first in the Nathan Cody series and think if I had read some of his other ones first I might have enjoyed this book more.

The books starts of great and drew me in quickly - I loved the coded message left for Sara and how she was able to work it out!
Cody is a complex character and had obviously been through a very traumatic experience whilst in the job (this is when I would have been helpful to read previous books) so we see many sides to him. I found it hard to like him and some of the situations he is put in by Waldo didn’t help either.

I found an awful lot of this book was based on the other books so at times I felt it slow and hard going. The beginning of the story was exciting, the middle was ok and then the ending seemed very quick and rushed. It does leave you hanging on for what will happen in future books though which is good!

A mixed review of this book but as previously said, I think I would have enjoyed it more had I read David Jackson’s books previously.

I’m a huge fan of the DS Nathan Cody series, and when I saw that there was a new installment I was thrilled! It felt like I had been waiting for AGES for it, but it was definitely worth it!

Your Deepest Fear sees Cody investigating a murder where the bereaved wife is displaying rather unusual tendencies. Not upset when she should be, and quite secretive at times. This leads Cody to thinking there is more than meets the eye with Sara. The reader gets glimpses into Sara’s train of thought, and as she becomes almost vigilante-like in her quest for justice for her murdered husband, even Cody is pulled into it unknowingly.

Parallel to this, and I’m mindful of spoilers here, Cody has his own problems. Issues in his past have led him to experience some emotional turmoil, and he’s still feeling the effects. Terrifyingly, his past is coming back to haunt him in a big way in Your Deepest Fear.

I’ve never seen him as vulnerable as he is in this book, and it works really well. You get a deeper insight into how his mind is working almost overtime to keep on top of everything and processing what’s happening around him in this book.

Your Deepest Fear is a supremely satisfying thriller. It gives you the creeps, pulls you in immediately and doesn’t let you go until the bitter end. It is clever, dark and downright scary.

I LOVED IT!

Highly recommended, as always!
