“The Miseducation of Evie Epworth” is a delightfully charming book that had me smiling and laughing from the first page until the very last full stop. I didn’t know that I needed Evie in my life, but I did, and you do too. She’s enchanting and also a bit befuddled (a hard combination to pull off, to be sure) as she navigates her way through her awkward teen years. She is helped by the guidance of an attentive neighbour and her affection for Adam Faith, not to mention the good sense that comes from being from Yorkshire. This truly is the perfect book for right now, as it made me forget the the dumpster fire that is 2020 and instead immersed me into the Evie's life in Yorkshire in 1962. (PS: I predict great things for the four lads from Liverpool who are just hitting the airwaves.)

I did not like this one starting out, but I grew to be thoroughly charmed by the end of the book. The narrative voice and writing style was poetic and fresh (but to an extent that I frequently found myself wondering if this narrative or author would find themselves better suited to a different medium than a literary novel.)

The pace began slowly, and there is not much in the way of plot; the narrative centers around the coming-of-age of Evie and is very character driven—both in Evie’s character and her exploration of the characters in her community around her. The author does wonderfully at capturing the voice and feeling of a teenager facing the world and her future—and that was where most of the charm for me lay. I very much remember what it was to be a teenager trapped at home with emotionally difficult adults, and once I had gotten to know Evie and learned about her world, I very much felt I was there with her; I remembered that I once was her. Though it took me about halfway through the book to settle in and warm up to it, I soon felt like Evie was my little sister or a younger friend, and I found myself rooting for her and her future—and mine.

I was so ready to love it

A delight to read.

Many thanks to the author and The Pigeonhole for the free ebook in exchange for an honest review.

The characters are engaging. The kind you love and the kind you love to hate. This bittersweet story of coming of age, finding oneself and sorting out the bully is truly delightful.

Evie is witty, charming and resourceful. She had me laughing out loud and I often found myself gripping the book in frustration at Evie’s unfortunately circumstances. Evie is a viivid character that you can’t help but enjoy from beginning to end.

I especially loved the ending of this story. Very entertaining and and especially satisfying.

It’s just a great book!

was good by the end but took me a while to get into it. Once Caroline appeared the storyline with her was really good and interesting to read.

it wasnt what i was expecting going into it, but it still enjoyed it nonetheless

That was lovely and lighthearted right up until it got REALLY dark. I really enjoyed it. Love to see a horrible character get their comeuppance and people who love each other come together. It kind of seems like Evie is the kind of person who will figure things out eventually but all the adults around her are REALLY the ones who are struggling. She’s learning a lot of lessons from observing.

One thing that didn’t happen that should have: you should probably face some criminal consequences when you poison someone and send them to the hospital for a long time . . . ? Right? I don’t know.
